Tourism Council Update

Preparing for Summer and a Historic Year for Gloucester


In the June 16 meeting of the Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Tourism Council, our group discussed plans for the important summer season -- we looked ahead to the year-long Gloucester 400+ celebration and tourist opportunities with the exciting updates planned for the Gloucester’s Sawyer Free Library.


To lead these discussions, we welcomed two guests to our June meeting: Isabel Pett, events manager for the celebration of Gloucester’s 400th year; and Jenny Benedict, library director for the Sawyer Free Library. Read Full Report

Gloucester Small Business Persons of the Year Update Lenny & Dottie Linquata of the Gloucester House Restaurant have expressed their sincere gratitude for the Recognition and this award from the Chamber and the community. In lieu of a public reception they have elected donate to the Grace Center in Gloucester.

The Massachusets Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has a comprehensive mitigation plan to address travel impacts and provide cost effective alternative transportation options for residents and visitors ahead of the scheduled closure of the Sumner Tunnel from Wednesday, July 5, through Thursday, August 31, 2023. The tunnel will be fully closed for approximately two months to facilitate work on the Sumner Tunnel Restoration Project. 


Travelers are encouraged to Ditch the Drive and use alternative means of travel. MassDOT has created a menu of safe, efficient commute options while the tunnel is closed for repairs. Travelers can utilize MassDOT 511 to help review traffic conditions and MBTA’s Trip Planner to plan their public transit trips.

Gloucester's Culture Splash Dives into its 3rd Year with an Expanded Lineup


Get ready to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Gloucester as Culture Splash gears up for its third year. The event series is set to kick off on Thursday, July 6th, adding an exciting blend of new offerings to its already impressive roster. Culture Splash has also had a light rebrand thanks to local designer Alex Warden, and visitors will notice a new logo and color scheme donned on signage, stickers, and flyers this year.


Home to two of Massachusetts' designated cultural districts, Rocky Neck and Harbortown, Gloucester has a unique blend of history, fine arts, creativity, maritime tradition, and diverse cultures. Cape Ann families who need a little extra help putting food on the table this summer can turn to The Open Door Summer Meals program.

Tracy Arabian named as Paul Harris Fellow by Gloucester Rotary


(From Gloucester TImes) The Gloucester Rotary has named Tracy Arabian as a Paul Harris Fellow, the prestigious award named after the Chicago lawyer who founded Rotary in 1905. She was selected by a committee of previous recipients of the award, and honored at a special dinner in May at Cruiseport Gloucester. Read Full Article

Campbell Funeral Home acquires Whittier-Porter Funeral Home in Ipswich


(From Gloucester TImes) Campbell Funeral Home, of Beverly and Gloucester, announced earlier this month that it acquired the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home at 6 High St. in Ipswich. The new funeral home will be called the Campbell-Porter Funeral Home. Glenn Campbell, funeral director and owner of the Campbell Funeral Home, said it was a privilege to have the opportunity to serve residents of Ipswich and its neighboring towns. He and his daughter, Lauren Campbell Mulligan, are fourth- and fifth-generation funeral service providers. He also said he and his team are excited to work alongside Robert Porter, a highly regarded funeral director in the industry who will remain at the Ipswich funeral home.

Ipswich Installs 3-hole Disc Golf Course


(From Ipswich Local News) A new three-hole disc golf course is open and free for use at the athletic fields behind the town hall, says Kerrie Bates, director of Ipswich ReCreation and Culture. According to Bates, the conservation commission approved the course recently, and it was installed on Friday. It was the third proposal that Ipswich resident Henry Ebinger — with the help of some friends — brought to the town. Read More
