Open Forum Scheduled in Manchester on October 16

As winter nears, need grows at food pantries
(From Gloucester Daily Times) The region’s food pantries are setting records, and it isn’t a good thing.
The Open Door’s Gloucester and Ipswich operations have “seen an increase of 28% in requests for food assistance this year,” Executive director Julie LaFontaine said.
“At the same time, our Mobile Markets — reaching 25 locations throughout Essex County — have expanded to serve a 50% increase in participation,” she said. “Our kitchen now prepares 600 to 800 meals a day for pick up or distribution, up from 200 to 250 a day a year ago.” Read More
Note: There are still a few tickets remaining for the Autumn Breakfast 2023 tomorrow morning at 7:30 - 9 AM at the Beauport Hotel. The breakfast will honor a number of its volunteers and also kickstarts its holiday basket fundraiser and Thanksgiving food drives across Cape Ann and the North Shore. Donations help connect local people to good food over the holidays and beyond.

Essex archives to be dedicated in honor of Witham
(From Gloucester Daily Times) The archives at the Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum will take on all the more significance now that it will honor Essex historian and museum volunteer Jim Witham. The archives will be formally dedicated in Witham’s name on Friday, Oct. 13, with a ceremony from 4-6 p.m. The gathering will take place at the Old School House, 28 Main St., where the archives are stored. Essex librarian to step down; reception on Oct. 19 to honor Debbie French
(From Gloucester Daily Times) ESSEX — After 18 years of service to patrons of TOHP Burnham Public Library, Director Debbie French will be stepping down. To honor French, town and library officials are planning a retirement reception on Oct. 19 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the library, 30 Martin St. in Essex. The reception will be held in the third-floor auditorium.

Barry Shiffman continues as Artistic Director of Rockport Chamber Music Festival
Rockport Music is pleased to announce the re-appointment of Barry Shiffman as Artistic Director of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival and Classical programming. This will continue his position as artistic director through 2028.

Cape Ann Animal Aid Pet of the Week
Irita is being featured as a part of Cape Ann Animal Aid’s Extended Stay Program. Her adoption fee is reduced to $200 and includes three months of heartworm/flea/tick prevention along with a consult with the Behavior Associate to help ensure success with her new family. Irita is a 7-month-old Sato from Puerto Rico. She is currently in a foster home and learning confidence and new skills. Her foster mom writes, “ I am learning to love pets and snuggles and how to be silly and has been the very best girl!” Irita will be most happy with another dog in her new home who will help build her confidence.
