Businesswomen's Committee Extends Scholarship Deadline
The Businesswomen’s Committee has extended the Carolyn M. O’Connor Scholarship application deadline to March 31. One scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded in early May to a woman who is returning to the workforce or is considering a career change, in an effort to better their life situation.

We held our second virtual business after hours event on Wednesday, February 24. The featured business was Cape Ann Motor Inn and Innkeeper Loran Caputo gave a terrific overview of her business, background, and commitment to the Cape Ann community. Later, breakout rooms, cocktails, icebreakers, and plenty of networking took place.

FDA Approves Single-Dose Johnson & Johnson Vaccine
On Saturday, February 27 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for a third vaccine to prevent COVID-19. The EUA for the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine was issued to Janssen Biotech Inc., a Johnson & Johnson (J&J) company. According to the company’s statement, “[Johnson & Johnson] has begun shipping its COVID-19 vaccine and expects to deliver enough single-shot vaccines by the end of March to enable the full vaccination of more than 20 million people in the U.S.” To read the complete FDA announcement please click here. Reopening Massachusetts Plan Advances
Massachusetts advanced to Step 2 of Phase III of the state’s reopening plan on Monday, March 1, and will transition to Step 1 of Phase IV on Monday, March 22. In announcing these measures, Governor Baker cited public health metrics that are continuing to show improvement, including drops in average daily COVID cases and hospitalizations and increasing vaccination rates. The following updates took effect on Monday, March 1:
- Restaurants will no longer have a percent capacity limit and will be permitted to host musical performances; six-foot social distancing, limits of six people per table and 90-minute limits will remain in place

SBA Targets Small and Low- and Moderate-Income (LMI) Businesses, Nonprofits for Forgivable PPP Loans
On Wednesday, February 24 SBA established a 14-day exclusive PPP loan application period for businesses and nonprofits with fewer than 20 employees. This will give lenders and community partners more time to work with the smallest businesses to submit their applications, while also ensuring that larger PPP-eligible businesses will still have plenty of time to apply for and receive support before the program expires on March 31, 2021.
