On Saturday, June 19 2021, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will celebrate Juneteenth as an official holiday, for the first time. The North Shore Juneteenth Association Inc. defines Juneteenth as an American Holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865, which is the date that enslaved Black people of Galveston, Texas learned that President Abraham Lincoln had freed enslaved people in rebel states two and a half years earlier. This was the last group of enslaved Black people to learn of their freedom! Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and is a day to reflect on how far we have come and how we will continue to move forward. Juneteenth is a day to focus on the complexity of the Black American experience. Please click here to learn more.

In the spirit of Juneteenth, we wish all a time of healing and reconciliation, learning and reflection, with respect for and rejoicing in America’s diversity.

Sincerely,

Your Chamber Team
