Meet SPAAR Hero Susan Gonyea

Susan Gonyea, a REALTOR® with Gonyea Properties, Inc., is SPAAR Hero for April 2019. Sue has been recognized for her work to educate and encourage the next generation of volunteers.

Before becoming a REALTOR®, Sue was an educator for 20 years, teaching kindergarten through 5th grade in a Montessori School and serving as a math and instructional specialist. She made a point of incorporating education about social justice into her classroom by introducing students to service opportunities that have impacted their communities.

Through the Gonyea Foundation, Sue continues to work with many former students to help them find ways to get involved. The 25 or so students meet every month to work on a community project and some of the students have been part of this group for five years. Examples of the projects the group has been instrumental in include crafting blankets for families in Guatemala; assembling toiletry kits and collecting coats for people who are homeless; making and selling jars of candy to support education for girls in Africa; and visiting nursing home residents.

Congratulations, Sue, for being named SPAAR Hero for April 2019! You are helping young people build better communities.
Nominate someone for the next SPAAR HERO

Each month, a member of SPAAR is recognized for their community involvement by being named SPAAR Hero. SPAAR Hero is coordinated by the Community Engagement Committee. Each month's SPAAR Hero is recognized in a news release, on social media and on SPAAR's website, and receives $250 for the nonprofit or cause they support.

Know someone who should be recognized as a SPAAR Hero? To nominate a SPAAR Hero, please provide details of the nominee's community service and the name of the cause or organization they support to Joe McKinley at (651) 772-6344 or jmckinley@spaar.com.

Free safety webinar tomorrow!

The National Association of REALTORS® has created a page for reporting member safety threats. For cases in which a physical or cyber threat to members warrants national attention, the REALTOR® Safety network will deploy an alert via social media. For incidents that don't meet the criteria for a national alert, the network will inform the local association.

Register for the safety webinar on April 23.
Weekly safety tips as provided by SPAAR and its members
SPAARky says:

Thwart thieves
Help your clients to be safe from anyone with ill intentions by locking up their valuables and moving items such as jewelry, bills, credit cards and medication from view of people, often strangers, who are viewing the property.

We like hearing what tips SPAAR members have to share, too, such as:
Trust your instincts. Do not meet strangers at vacant homes for showings or bring someone along so you're not alone. Make a point to meet your client at your office or a public place before heading out to see properties.

April is Fair Housing Month

On April 11, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which expanded on the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The 1968 Act prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex, handicap and family status.

Annual golf tournament supports Toys for Joy
"Last year, Toys for Joy served more than 1,000 families, including 2,900 children, during the holidays alone providing food, clothing, books, bikes and toys, and there's so much more," said Mike Hunstad, director at large for Toys for Joy. "We've also supplied toys, clothing and school supplies to many organizations that provide support to children and continue to provide support year-round to families in Anoka County. In 2018, Toys for Joy also provided five $1,000 scholarships to high school students who went above and beyond to support their communities."
