NFIP decision means home sales will continue without interruption, with thanks to NAR and RPAC
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) became a critical win for home sales during the partial shutdown of the federal government. Congress initially passed legislation in December, then the decision was reversed just days later. The National REALTORS® Association (NAR), along with other groups, successfully urged policy makes to reevaluate the decision.

"This decision means thousands of home sale transactions...can go forward without interruption. Research has shown that 40,000 home sales are lost each month that flood insurance is not available," according to NAR President John Smaby
.
This decision reversal was made possible due to those elected officials who support REALTOR® party issues and is just one of the many important issues that NAR focuses on on behalf of REALTORS®.

Consider investing in the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC), which raises money to support candidates from the national to local level. RPAC ensures that programs like NFIP can continue to operate. RPAC is the largest nonpartisan political action committee in Minnesota.
RPAC is 50!

The REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) has been in existence for 50 years!

So, what is RPAC? RPAC supports pro-REALTOR® candidates. RPAC is nonpartisan and contributes to and works with candidates who are REALTOR® allies, regardless of the letter behind their names. In fact, RPAC is the largest political action committee in the state to be recognized as nonpartisan.

Of your RPAC contribution through SPAAR, 70% is used to support state and local candidates in your area, while 30% is used to support federal candidates.
Walz administration names former Senator Kelley as DOC Commissioner
Former State Senator Steve Kelley has been named commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Commerce by the Walz administration.

According to Chris Galler, CEO of Minnesota REALTORS®, Sen. Kelley has already reached out to the state association, and they are planning to sit down soon to discuss REALTOR® priorities.

Sen. Kelley served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997, and served in the Minnesota Senate from 1997 to 2007. Currently, he is a Senior Fellow at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota and the Deputy Director of the Center for Integrative Leadership.

Previously, Sen. Kelley represented the Senate District that the MN REALTORS® office fell within. MN REALTORS® have supported him many times. Sen. Kelley is said to be a thoughtful politician who understands the balance between consumer rights and best business practices.

Weekly safety tips as provided by SPAAR and its members
SPAARky says:

You are not alone . If you encounter a person while working late or alone in your office, or if someone enters a property when you're alone and not expecting the visitor, say something that indicates you're not alone. A phrase may be, "let me quick check with my colleague and perhaps he/she can provide an answer now." Stay in a common area, if possible.

SPAAR members have shared some great tips, too, including:

"Bring only your essentials into an open house: your phone, sign-in sheet, brochures, pen and a small bag with any personal items you may need. Do not bring your purse or wallet unless it can stay on your body at all times. Do not leave the property key in plain view, but rather put it in your pocket. Lock the door when the last visitor leaves, then check all doors, windows, lights and when everything is as it should be, then leave and lock the door behind you."
What is your #1 safety tip to share?

In keeping with the safety theme introduced in this newsletter, what is your #1 safety tip?

Blue Star Mothers annual collection drive is underway. Learn how you can be a part of it!
The Blue Star Mothers Collection Drive is a SPAAR tradition orchestrated by the Community Engagement Committee. SPAAR members collect small items (snacks, magazines, toiletries, playing cards, colored pencils, sketch pads, etc.) for "We Care" packages sent to troops serving in active duty. The nonprofit, Blue Star Mothers, assembles the items in "We Care" packages and ships them. SPAAR's Community Engagement Committee has partnered with Blue Star Mothers for five years.

Lend a hand on Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 10-11am when SPAAR's Community Engagement Committee partners with St. Paul-based nonprofit Lyngblomsten to decorate collection boxes for Blue Star Mothers' annual collection drive. A minimum of 10 SPAAR members are needed for this hands-on volunteer opportunity, which should be a fun time! SPAAR volunteers will decorate the boxes alongside residents from Lyngblomsten's The Heritage apartments.

If you're unable to help decorate but still want to take part, consider sending supplies for the project. Magazines, fabric, cardstock, stickers and other decorating supplies are welcome. To register or donate supplies (by Jan. 18), email spaar@spaar.com or call 651-772-6344.

Blue Star Mothers collection box sites are needed, too. Place a decorated box in your office waiting area, meeting room or staff lounge. This is a great way to show office visitors your team is involved in the community and remembering those serving in the military.

SPAAR will be collecting items for "We Care" baskets now through March 31, 2019.
