AFSP's Out of the Darkness Walks Fundraisers

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness Walks are a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. They unite our communities and acknowledge how suicide and mental health conditions have affected our lives and the lives of those we care about.

The Fairfax Out of the Darkness Walk will take place on October 3, 2026, at the Mosaic District, Fairfax, VA.

See flyer below for several upcoming fundraisers to support the Fairfax Out of the Darkness Walk:

July 26 from 3pm to 9pm at Caboose Commons in Mosaic District
September 7 from 10am to 11pm at Shake Shack in Mosaic District (2911 District Avenue, Suite 110, Fairfax)

New Guide from SAMHSA: Navigating Mental Health and Substance Use Care: An Introductory Guide for Families

SAMHSA has issued a new introductory guide: Navigating Mental Health and Substance Use Care: An Introductory Guide for Families. This SAMHSA publication provides practical guidance to help families understand behavioral health systems, access resources, and support a loved one across different life stages and circumstances. It also highlights strategies for family wellness, peer support, advocacy, crisis preparedness, and recovery, reinforcing that families do not have to navigate these challenges alone.

Find Help At Your Local CSB

Each community has a Community Services Board (CSB), the public agency that provides services for people who have a mental illness, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities. CSBs also provide Wellness and Prevention initiatives, including trainings such as ACE Interface (Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resiliency), Mental Health First Aid, REVIVE, and suicide prevention. They also can provide or connect you to resources such as locking medication boxes and drug disposal bags.
