The SPAN Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN) is discouraged by the passage of the devastating federal budget bill—legislation with far-reaching and catastrophic consequences for children, families, and communities across the nation. This budget represents a direct assault on our most vulnerable families and is a betrayal of basic human dignity.
The legislation decimates Medicaid coverage for thousands of children and families, including those with disabilities, stripping them of essential healthcare services and supports that promote independence, inclusion, dignity, and quality of life. The bill also undermines the ability of schools to provide quality education—especially for low-income students, migrant students, homeless students, students who are English-language learners, at-risk students, and students with disabilities who rely on federally mandated education services.
Equally alarming are the sweeping cuts to the social safety net. This legislation slashes funding for programs that ensure access to affordable healthcare, nutrition (such as SNAP), housing supports, and other essential services. The likelihood of hospital closures, particularly in rural communities, endangers access to healthcare for everyone. These cuts will have major ramifications for children and families— undermining stability, increasing hardship, and deepening poverty in communities already at the margins. For families raising children with disabilities, these services are not optional—they are lifelines.
What is most disheartening is that this legislation passed in direct defiance of widespread public opposition. Families and advocates across the country expressed their concerns via protests, testimonies, letters, and calls, yet they were ignored. While the nation prepared to celebrate freedom and independence, this budget, which diminishes access, limits opportunity, and turns its back on the most vulnerable among us, was passed.
With unwavering resolve, SPAN remains steadfast in our commitment to protect the rights, health, and safety of all children, youth, and families. We will continue to provide resources, information, and support to help families navigate the changes to come. We will continue to raise our voices, stand with families, and fight for policies that prioritize the well-being of children, families, and communities.
