Faith Feature

Ordinary Time, Extraordinary Graces

On Monday, January 9, the Church closed the Christmas Season with the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is celebrated in relationship to the Epiphany, during which the Church prays a beautiful antiphon which expresses the spousal love of Christ who came to redeem us and bring us into union with him: "Today the Bridegroom claims his bride, the Church, since Christ has washed her sins away in Jordan's waters; the Magi hasten with their gifts to the royal wedding; and the wedding guests rejoice, for Christ has changed water into wine, alleluia. "These references to Christ's baptism, the visit of the "Three Kings," and the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana remind us that God became man so that man could come into union with God.

As we enter the First Week of Ordinary time, we are called to live more fully each day the graces we have received, including and especially the grace of our Baptism, which first made us members of God's Family and Christ's Body, the Church. We are called to be the star of Bethlehem leading all peoples to the Lord, and to be ourselves the Wise Men or Kings, offering the gold of our entire being, the incense of our prayers, and the myrrh of our self-sacrifice to the King of kings.
Let us begin!
