TEP chooses PARK AVENUE for 138kV poles!
Sad and disturbing news for Jefferson Park and shameful actions from TEP: the 138kV poles will bisect our neighborhood! In spite of the fact that the route is in the heart of a residential area, a National Historic District, and near a nursing home and re-hab facility - all labeled "sensitive receptors", TEP has chosen this as its "preferred route" for their 75-100 foot 138kV poles.

If you are not concerned, you have not been paying attention! Of any area in the entire project, Jefferson Park will suffer the greatest impact from this TEP project. No other neighborhood has the both an unsightly substation on its border and gigantic poles bisecting it.

What can you do? Carefully study the simulation, note your questions, and plan to attend the Virtual Open House Meeting, which will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 6 p.m. A postcard will be mailed to all in the study area in early June with the meeting details. At the open house meeting, TEP will discuss the visual simulations, their preferred route, which is now Route 1B, other alternative routes, and the filing of the application for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility with the ACC. They will also schedule a time for questions.
Be sure to voice your concerns. Ways to communicate:

Now is the Time to Push for Undergrounding!
This issue sets a precedent for all of Tucson!
A group of nine neighborhoods and two Tucson coalitions, led by Sam Hughes, are spearheading an effort to demonstrate that undergrounding the lines is the best option for Tucson. They are proposing that the cost (plus or minus 50 cents) could be added to Tucsonan's monthly bills. Thus far, the Undergrounding Coalition has:
1) published a position paper,
2) raised $23,000 toward the cost of retaining an attorney (initial total needed- $28,000),
3) located and interviewed an experienced attorney, and
4) is in the process of interacting with other neighborhoods along the route to gain additional support.

Grant Road Citizen's Task Force Reconvenes
What are the changes to the 30% plans? How will our northern border look?
Grant Road Task Force reconvenes to consider the requests of the neighborhoods:
This is an important meeting. We must fill the screen! They are reconsidering the 30% plans resubmitted by TDOT and PSOMAS. Will there be green space? Will Catalina Vista get a safety wall? Will there be consideration for the increased traffic on Mountain? What about the Michigan left?
Background information. Go to: http://www.grantroadcoalition.com/
We have posted the agenda for the Task Force Meeting, how to register for “Call to the Audience”, and the letter sent by the neighborhoods requesting certain things be considered.

More Poles in our Neighborhood
When is Enough ENOUGH ?

Here is the map, which is updated daily:

You can click on the circle (red with green dot) to get to the permit info.
If you see digging or receive a notice (on your porch, etc.), e-mail or call the Ward III office. They are pursuing the issue and demanding "co-location" of 5G - i.e. put them on existing TEP poles--not another pole next to residences!
Jefferson Park locations so far:

NW corner Waverly/Fremont, SW corner Tyndall/Lester

More U of A Construction
The U of A will begin to build the project - the Applied Research Building on Helen, just south of the Highland Parking garage.

For those residents who bike or walk to the U of A, please note that the Highland Underpass will be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists over the summer and will reopen in August.
If you notice an increase in parking and traffic in the neighborhood, over-sized construction trucks, or other disruptions, or have questions or concerns, please contact Melissa Dryden, PDC @ mdryden@email.arizona.ed
Health and Heritage Trail
This ancient old man witnessed the changes on Jefferson Park's northern boundary. He's seen it all - pristine desert, homes, expanding Grant Road, demolitions, bare ground, and now a reclamation in the form of a linear park.

Two signs appeared recently. We await the historic signage that promotes the "Heritage" in Health and Heritage Trail. More to come in the form of six signs that tell the story of Jefferson Park, a memorial bench to the park's staunchest advocate - Minnette Burges, and additional trees for the east end of the trail. Neighbors made this happen and we thank all our city partners as well.
FINALLY! PAVING IN JP
You might have heard that the City approved $14 million ($2 million per Ward plus $2 million for the Mayor's Office) in funding for residential road reconstruction. The Ward 3 office has decided to use their $2 million allocation to repave a portion of Jefferson Park. The map is attached. The area is from Park to Mountain and Chauncey to Grant.
The work will take place in the new fiscal year beginning some time after July 1st. As its gets closer, Ward III will have more information. Stay tuned for updates!
ADU's ...a mixed blessing
The City is proposing to change the land use code to allow Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Currently, ADUs with full kitchens are not allowed, only dwelling units without full kitchens. These are often referred to as casitas, mother-in-law units or granny flats. For more information, contact your Land Use Committee – joanchall@yahoo.com
