JIMMY MARTIN FIELD

Dedication Ceremony Scheduled For

Sunday, Feb. 19, At Softball Complex

Limestone University will formally dedicate “Jimmy Martin Field” at its new softball complex on Sunday, Feb. 19, in between games of a doubleheader.

Martin, who helped take Limestone softball to unprecedented heights as part of a 23-year head coaching career that made him the program's all-time winningest coach, retired from the diamond in 2013.

Jimmy Martin Field was recently constructed in the grass area located adjacent to the Timken Center on campus.

The first game against Chowan University on February 19 will get underway at 12 noon. The “Jimmy Martin Field” dedication ceremony will take place prior to the first pitch of the second contest against the visiting Hawks. The estimated time of the dedication ceremony is approximately 1:30 p.m. Martin, members of his family, several friends, and many former players will be in attendance.

Limestone officials have said that the new softball complex will be further developed in the future to include permanent stands, brick dugouts, batting cages, and bullpens, as well as a new softball locker room inside the Timken Center. Fundraising efforts are ongoing to make those future improvements.

Limestone’s softball team last played on campus in 2014. The former softball field, situated next to the Saints’ baseball stadium, was removed as part Limestone’s plan to develop a new welcome center for its outdoor athletic facilities. That project led to the construction of Shannon Hamrick Park and the new amenities that came with the creation of the Bob Prevatte Athletic Complex. Since then, the University’s softball team has played its home games at Babe Ruth Field located on Twin Lakes Road in Gaffney.

Limestone University Department Of Music

To Host Cherokee County Fifth Graders Tuesday

Limestone University’s Department of Music will welcome Cherokee County’s fifth grade students on Tuesday, Feb. 7, for an annual event that has been held on campus for 15 years.

The performances are planned by Limestone’s music faculty as an opportunity to help the local students make choices about music participation as they prepare to move from elementary to middle school.

The private concert event for the fifth graders will take place at Fullerton Auditorium. It is not open to the public.

“We are excited to bring this event, and the Cherokee County fifth graders, back to campus,” said Limestone Director of Instrumental Music Seth Taft.

The students will hear music from various television shows and movies, including Pokémon, Star Wars, and Pirates of the Caribbean. There will also be demonstrations of different types of voices as well as the instruments that the students will be able to choose from as they select their classes for middle school.

Donations Being Sought For Upgrades

To Saints Field Seating & Amenities

Improvements Will Be Funded Completely By Contributions

Fundraising efforts are currently underway to provide upgrades to Saints Field, which hosts Limestone University football, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, and field hockey. The upgrades will also provide Limestone the opportunity to move future graduation ceremonies to the stadium, as well as host other large-scale events.

Saints Field will host the NCAA Division II Field Hockey National Championship 2024. The NCAA announced in 2020 that Limestone, in partnership with OneSpartanburg, Inc., will serve as the host site for the 2024 Field Hockey National Championship. Two national semifinal games and the national title game will be played at Saints Field. Bringing four teams to Limestone, the semifinal contests will be held November 22, and the Field Hockey National Championship will be played on November 24.

The latest renderings include plans to replace the artificial turf, expand seating for Saints fans, build visitor seating, provide rental cabanas, construct two new restrooms/concessions stands, expand the hospitality space for Saints Club members and fans, erect a new scoreboard, and provide more fencing.

Limestone officials have stressed that funding for the Saints Field upgrades will come 100 percent from donors, corporate sponsors, advertisers, and other partners.
