Third Sunday in Lent

We are a progressive congregation that finds more truth in questions than in answers.

Today's service will not have a traditional Zoom Host.

The service will be monitored by our

A/V Operator, Kevin Seisenbacher.

Ushers: Deacon Steve Fabes

COMMUNION

Being the first Sunday of the month, we will celebrate communion! A renewed special invitation to those who will be celebrating with us from home -- we would STILL like to update our "communion plate collage" that we created when we first started worshipping on Zoom. If you can take a photo of your plate and elements and send it to the church, we will create a new collage.

Remember to gather the communion elements before signing onto Zoom; some bread and fruit of the vine, ideally wine or grape juice, but in a pinch any liquid will do.

Hymn # 401 – Here in This Place

Here in this place the new light is streaming;

now is the darkness vanished away;

see in this space our fears and our dreamings

brought here to you in the light of this day.

Gather us in, the lost and forsaken;

gather us in, the blind and the lame;

call to us now, and we shall awaken;

we shall arise at the sound of our name.

Not in the dark of buildings confining,

not in some heaven, light years away:

here in this place the new light is shining;

now is the kingdom, and now is the day.

Gather us in and hold us forever;

gather us in and make us your own;

gather us in, all peoples together,

fire of love in our flesh and our bone.

Writing of Our Prayers

Send your prayers in the chat room. Prayers will be prayed by the Prayer Group.

Reading – Dennis Watson

Genesis 2:4-14 (NRSV)

These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. In the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up -- for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground-- then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.

And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flows out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and becomes four branches. The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

The Message – Pastor Paul

The breath of life

The Sacrament of Communion

All are welcome to the table.

Prayers of the Community

Silent Prayer

The Lord's Prayer

Some of us say, "forgive us our debts," and others, "forgive us our trespasses." Please pray with the words that are familiar to you and speak to your relationship with God. We seek unity, not conformity.

Communion Anthem – The SPC Choir

Ubi caritas by Maurice Duruflé

Where there is charity and love,

God is there,

the love of Christ has gathered us together,

let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Let us revere and love the living God,

and from a sincere heart let us love one another.

Hymn # 14 – For the Beauty of the Earth

For the beauty of the earth,

for the glory of the skies,

for the love which from our birth

over and around us lies:

Lord of all, to thee we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

For the wonder of each hour

of the day and of the night,

hill and vale, and tree and flow’r,

sun and moon, and stars of light,

Lord of all, to thee we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

For the joy of human love,

Brother, sister, parent child,

friends on earth, and friends above,

for all gentle thoughts and mild:

Lord of all, to thee we raise

this our hymn of grateful praise.

Benediction

PRAYER & HEALING GROUP

First & Third Tuesdays of the month at 5:30 PM

Next meeting is THIS Tuesday, March 5

No matter who you are and what you believe, we welcome you to join us in an hour of peaceful prayer.

Come pray for yourself, your family and friends, our church / country / world.

When we gather, we take time for silent prayer as well as lifting up those prayers that have been offered up on Sunday, both in person and online.

We like to say no experience necessary! You may have never prayed in your life. Or maybe not in a long while. Let us simply gather in a blessed and peaceful time of connection, where we can pray and minister to each other's needs.

No RSVP is necessary, just come to Thomson Hall at 5:30 PM on the 1st or 3rd Tuesday of the month.

BEYOND THE BOOK

Wednesday, March 13 at 6:00 PM

Sister John of the Cross is a Carmelite nun, who, after years of dedicated but routine service, begins to experience visions of the divine in ecstatic, crystalline clarity. But these visions are accompanied by terrible headaches, and Sister John is encouraged to seek medical attention. When told by a neurologist that her experiences of the divine are likely the result of (curable) epileptic seizures, Sister John is forced to rethink everything she knows about spiritual life.

Sister John's thoughts are printed in italics and you feel a part of her struggle. This short novel engages readers in exploring the spiritual dimensions of the self. A beautiful, poignantly human narrative that asks, what sustains us?

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO BRUNCH?

Sunday, March 17 at 1:00 PM

Sign-up Now!

Please sign up NOW to be a host or guest on Sunday March 17 at 1:00 PM -- email Joan Glas at [email protected].

Sponsored by the Deacons, this event is based on our previous one called, “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?”

This is a Sunday Brunch hosted by a member of the congregation with 4-6 guests coming to the host(s) home for a meal. It is a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other better in an intimate setting. It works like this:

1. Church congregants will sign up to be hosts or guests.

2. Each host will provide an entree for approximately 6-8 people, based on the number of guests the host wishes to entertain.

3. Guests will bring sides and beverages, as discussed with the host.

4. The hosts will know who is coming; the guests only know whose house they are visiting. Ideally, none of the hosts and guests are close friends.

5. We will select three Sundays during the year for a brunch. March 17 is the first one. The time will generally be after Fellowship and start around 12:30 PM/1:00 PM. Additional brunches will be in May and October. Go to one; go to all three! Host one brunch and be a guest at another. It is up to you.

Please sign up NOW to be a host or a guest by emailing Joanie Corbett Glas at [email protected] and include your contact information, the number of guests you can host or that you wish to be a guest. Call Joan at 415 609-5202 if you have questions.
