COMMUNION

Being the first Sunday of the month, we will celebrate communion! A renewed special invitation to those who will be celebrating with us from home -- we would STILL like to update our "communion plate collage" that we created when we first started worshipping on Zoom. If you can take a photo of your plate and elements and send it to the church, we will create a new collage.

Remember to gather the communion elements before signing onto Zoom; some bread and fruit of the vine, ideally wine or grape juice, but in a pinch any liquid will do.

Hymn # 796 – We Come to You for Healing, Lord (Tune: Land of Rest)

We come to you for healing, Lord,

of body, mind and soul,

and pray that by your Spirit’s touch

we may again be whole.

As once you walked through ancient streets

and reached toward those in pain,

we know you come among us still

with power to heal again.

We come to you, O loving Lord,

in our distress and pain,

in trust that through our nights and days

You grace will heal, sustain.

Writing of Our Prayers

Send your prayers in the chat room. Prayers will be prayed by the Prayer Group.

Reading – Marty Hartrick

Mark 14:16-26 (NRSV)

So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

When it was evening, he came with the twelve. And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.’ They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, ‘Surely, not I?’ He said to them, ‘It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the same bowl with me. For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.’

While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. He said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’

When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Hymn # 611 – Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee,

God of glory, Lord of love!

Hearts unfold like flowers before thee,

opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;

Drive the dark of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness,

Fill us with the light of day.

All thy works with joy surround thee;

earth and heaven reflect thy rays;

stars and angels sing around thee,

center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain,

flowery meadow, flashing sea,

chanting bird and flowing fountain,

call us to rejoice in thee.

PRAYER & HEALING GROUP

First & Third Tuesdays of the month at 5:30 PM

No matter who you are and what you believe, we welcome you to join us in an hour of peaceful prayer.

Come pray for yourself, your family and friends, our church / country / world.

When we gather, we take time for silent prayer as well as lifting up those prayers that have been offered up on Sunday, both in person and online.

We like to say no experience necessary! You may have never prayed in your life. Or maybe not in a long while. Let us simply gather in a blessed and peaceful time of connection, where we can pray and minister to each other's needs.

No RSVP is necessary, just come to Thomson Hall at 5:30 PM on the 1st or 3rd Tuesday of the month.

BEYOND THE BOOK

Wednesday, February 14 at 6:00 PM

Our next book selection is TOM LAKE by Ann Patchett. It's spring and Lara's three grown daughters have returned to the family orchard. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the one story they've always longed to hear – of the film star with whom she shared a stage, and a romance, years before. TOM LAKE is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart.

This is a story about Peter Duke who went on to be a famous actor.

This is a story about falling in love with Peter Duke who wasn't famous at all.

It's about falling so wildly in love with him – the way one will at twenty-four – that it felt like jumping off a roof at midnight.

There was no way to foresee the mess it would come to in the end.

A kindly SPC-er has a copy of TOM LAKE for anyone who needs one. (Contact Gianni.)

THE KIRKIN' O' THE TARTAN

Sunday, February 25 at 10:00 AM

Join us for a buoyant and joyous gathering as we commemorate the Scottish-American tradition of blessing the family tartan. Helping us worship will be Jim Osborn, Brenda McKown, pipers from the MacIntosh Pipe Band Lindsay Hall and Jonathan Han, and the spirit and memory of Bill McKown -- a celebration not to be missed!

What is the Kirking of the Tartans?

The Dress Act 1746 (repealed in 1782) was passed by the English parliament and made wearing the Highland Dress including a tartan or a kilt, illegal in Scotland. The Jacobite Risings between 1689 and 1746 found their most effective support amongst the Scottish clans, and this Act was part of a series of measures attempting to bring the warrior clans under government control. To survive under this tyranny, the Scots hid tartan swatches under their clothing and brought them to be blessed at the kirk (church), thus keeping their Scottish heritage alive.

The tradition was revived during WWII by Rev. Peter Marshall, a Scottish Presbyterian minister and Senate Chaplain in Washington, DC, who encouraged Scottish-Americans to sign up to fight on behalf of Great Britain. He re-created the Kirkin' o' the Tartans ceremony in 1941 to promote this effort. Today, this Scottish tradition is remembered by the displaying of tartans and public parade of the clans to the sound of the bagpipes.

Though originally a celebration of Scottish heritage, many Christian denominations now celebrate the Kirkin' o' the Tartans.

Join us for bagpipes, tartan banners, and Scottish food and music!

We will gather at the elephant statues at Vina del Mar Plaza on Bridgeway (across from the Wells Fargo bank) at 9:40 AM and then march up Princess Street, following the pipers and kilt-clad celebrants.

The wearing of kilts and plaids is encouraged!
