WE MOURN THE PASSING OF

KATHLEEN MARIE HALVERSON

Mother of Kathy Hooper

We received news that Ralph Hooper's mother-in-law, Kathleen Marie Halverson, passed away on December 29, 2023. She lived in Wisconsin and her passing followed a long illness and had been expected. While missing her greatly, the family is relieved that she is out of her suffering.

The photograph here is Kathy's mom as a young woman. Her roots were French and Norwegian. Ralph and Kathy were married in 1989 and Ralph has said he can see Kathy's beauty reflected in her mom.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ralph and Kathy and their entire family.

THIS SUNDAY WE WELCOME

THE REV. DR. JANA CHILDERS

The Rev. Dr. Jana Childers is Professor Emerita at San Francisco Theological Seminary, where she also served as Dean. A Presbyterian minister who served congregations in Kansas and New Jersey, she holds degrees from Wheaton College, Princeton Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA.  She is the author and editor of numerous books and articles about preaching, including the award-winning Birthing the Sermon: Women Preachers on Creative Process.  Jana has appeared several times on The Chicago Sunday Evening Club television program, co-hosted Mosaic, a Sunday morning program on KPIX and was featured on the Hallmark Channel’s Great Preachers series.  She lives in Novato, CA with her two lively English Cocker Spaniels.

Rev. Childers is a friend of our Pastor Emeritus, the Rev. George McLaird, and is a highly acclaimed and sought-after speaker! We are excited to welcome her to her first preaching engagement at SPC!

BEYOND THE BOOK

Second Wednesday of the month

This Coming Wednesday, January 10 at 6:00 PM

Our next read is Plainsong by Kent Haruf, suggested by Elin Hyytinen.

PRAYER & HEALING GROUP

First & Third Tuesdays of the month at 5:30 PM

Next Meeting is Tuesday, January 16

No matter who you are and what you believe, we welcome you to join us in an hour of peaceful prayer.

Come pray for yourself, your family and friends, our church / country / world.

When we gather, we take time for silent prayer as well as lifting up those prayers that have been offered up on Sunday, both in person and online.

We like to say no experience necessary! You may have never prayed in your life. Or maybe not in a long while. Let us simply gather in a blessed and peaceful time of connection, where we can pray and minister to each other's needs.

No RSVP is necessary, just come to Thomson Hall at 5:30 PM on the 1st or 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Questions? Contact Deacon Alison Deal at [email protected]

All are welcome!

MOVIE CLUB WITH JOE & PAUL

Wednesday, January 17 at 2:00 PM

THE GREAT ESCAPER (2023) stars legendary actors Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson (in her last screen role). It is based on the true story of 89-year-old British World War II Royal Navy veteran Bernard Jordan who "broke out" of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France in June 2014.

We watch the film and discuss it in the comfort of THall Cinema (Thomson Hall!). Light refreshments served. Questions? Email Joe at [email protected]

DO YOU BAKE?

Please help us welcome our guests

We have all seen the delight on people's faces when they are handed a small, home-baked loaf of bread from a smiling usher! What better way to practice hospitality than to feed our guests with something crafted by the loving hands of an SPC-er. We need bakers! If you are interested, please email Deacon Alison Deal at [email protected]

A CHRISTMAS WITHOUT SNOW

That's Sterling Lim in TV Movie (John Houseman in the foreground)

Leaving her son behind at her parents' home in Omaha, Neb., recent divorcée Zoe (Michael Learned) attempts to start her life anew by moving to San Francisco. Seeking something to fill her lonely hours, she begins singing with a church choir. When new choirmaster Ephraim Adams (John Houseman) is hired, Zoe finds his attitudes and ideas difficult to tolerate. Faced with the challenging task of satisfying Adams' unrelenting perfectionism, Zoe is tempted once more to run away from her problems.

In addition to Learned, Houseman, and LIM (!), the films stars a very young James Cromwell.

HOW TO ZOOM
There are three ways to connect to Zoom -- by computer; by phone; or by an app on your smartphone or tablet.

On a computer might be the easiest and give you the most options. It is definitely best for worship.

TO CONNECT BY COMPUTER:
  1. Click on the meeting link. That will take you to Zoom.
  2. The first time you do this, you might get a prompt asking you to install Zoom. Click YES.
  3. Most of the time, you might get a popup window: Open Zoom? Click OPEN ZOOM.
  4. You might get two more prompts about video and audio. If your computer has a built-in camera, or you have one that’s plugged into your computer, Join with Video. If you have a built in mic (most computers built in the past 10 years have one), Join with Computer Audio.
  5. You should see a small microphone icon on the lower, left corner of your Zoom screen. Click on it to mute or unmute your mic. Sometimes, our Worship Tech will mute everyone. You can also turn your video (camera) on and off the same way.

Zoom has a one-minute video on how to sign on, and also one that shows how to sign on through your computer, which you can watch here: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362193-Joining-a-Meeting
