Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources is partnering with the Shepherd Center to offer the 2025 SPIRIT of Inclusion Expo on Sunday, March 23, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road.


Free and open to everyone, the Spirit of Inclusion Expo is a one-day event dedicated towards connecting individuals with disabilities and their families with valuable resources and services. Our expo aims to provide information, support, and opportunities to enhance the quality of life for attendees.



This event will feature a diverse range of vendors, organizations, and experts dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities.

Egg-ceptional Zone

Saturday, April 5 | 10:30-11 am

Join us Saturday, April 5, from 10-10:30 a.m. at Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road, for an Egg-ceptional Eggs-perience.


Our Egg-ceptional Zone will cater to children with disabilities and their families.


The purpose of this zone is to provide a fun, safe, family-friendly environment that allows children who may have difficulty participating in a traditional egg hunt the opportunity to pick up eggs at their own pace. Bring a buddy to help if needed.

Brain Power Bistro: Adaptive Cooking

Fridays in March | 10:30 am-Noon

Offered at Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road, Fridays in March from 10:30 a.m.-noon, Brainpower Bistro simplifies delicious recipes for individuals with neurological challenges (TBI, stroke, etc.).


In each session, you’ll master easy, nutritious dishes tailored to meet diverse needs, and best of all, we’ll savor our culinary creations together.


Come cook, connect, and enjoy the journey to culinary independence with us!

Caregiver Kindred

Thursday, March 13 | 6:30-8 pm

Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road


Kindred embodies connectivity, similarities, and familial connection.


Are you a parent or caregiver for an individual with a disability? Do you carve to connect with others to have a fruitful discussion about the opportunities, resources, and hurdles faced in your daily life when providing care to your loved ones?


Caregivers Kindred will be the place where we will join each other once a month to discuss topics, gain resources, and connect with those walking in similar shoes. Whether you consider yourself the expert or the novice, we are all kindred here and are eager to learn from one another.


This month, we invite parents and caregivers to come together on Thursday, March 13, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Joyner Park Community Center Dance Studio to share, connect and discuss. 

Therapeutic Neuro Expression - Coming Fridays in June!


Therapeutic Neuro Expression is holistic program that encourages individuals with neurological disorders (TBI, Stroke, etc.) to explore and express themselves through art, journaling, and other creative outlets.


By engaging in these therapeutic activities, participants can enhance their emotional well-being, improve cognitive function, and foster a supportive community.


Coming Fridays in June from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Flaherty Park Community Center, this program will offer a safe and nurturing environment to explore personal narratives and unlock creative potential.

SPIRIT Open Play at Joyner Park Community Center


SPIRIT Wake Forest will host Open Play for individuals with disabilities on Wednesdays in March from 2-3:30 p.m. at Flaherty Park Community Center and Saturdays in March from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at Joyner Park Community Center.


All ages and all abilities are welcome!


Whether you're looking to have fun, get active, or connect with others, everyone is welcome to enjoy a supportive and accessible space.


Open Play Time is free for RecCard holders and $5 for non-RecCard holders.

March Programs

Inspiration Art


Inspiration Art is a 90-minute inclusive art program designed to empower individuals with disabilities through artistic expression. Offered at Flaherty Park Community Center, 1226 N. White St., this program provides a supportive, accessible environment where participants can explore various forms of art, enhance their creativity, and build confidence in their artistic abilities.


The program is tailored to accommodate all skill levels and abilities, ensuring that every participant has the opportunity to express themselves and engage with art in a meaningful way.


This month we are doing things a little differently! We will be offering this class at Flaherty Park Community Center, 1226 N. White St., on Mondays from 3:30-5 p.m. instead of the usual 6:30-8 p.m. Register today!

Cooking with Friends


Cooking with Friends is a specialized cooking program for individuals with disabilities. This class will focus on simple cooking and baking recipes that can be prepared as independently as possible.


An instructor will help students concentrate on safety in the kitchen, learn basic cooking skills, follow recipe directions and work on communication. The students will be able to take the cooking skills that they learned and use it at home to impress family and friends.


Come join us as it’s a fun time to socialize with new and old friends. Students will have the opportunity to taste and bring home leftovers to share with the family.


We are changing things up by offering sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-6:30 p.m. at Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road.

Smiling While Sending Hope Ability Club


Smiling While Sending Hope is a youth program designed to empower individuals with chronic illnesses and disabilities through the integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education.


The program aims to inspire participants to explore and engage with creative problem-solving, innovation, and hands-on learning, fostering both personal growth and a sense of community.


Parents will be asked to stay with the youth.


For ages 5 and older, Smiling While Sending Hope Ability Club will take place at Joyner Park Community Center on Tuesday, March 18, from 7-8 p.m.

Dream League Baseball

Saturdays in April & May | 10 am-noon

Heritage High Park, 1150 Forestville Road

Dream League Baseball is an inclusive and adaptive baseball league dedicated to individuals with disabilities. Our league offers a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone can enjoy the excitement. Our league games take place on Saturday mornings throughout April and May, at Heritage High Park.


It's not just a baseball league; it's a place where dreams are nurtured and cherished. Dream League is passionate about making sure that each participant has an unforgettable and fulfilling experience on the field.



We will meet at Heritage High Park on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-noon. Be sure to bring your own helmet!

Boccia Bash

Friday, April 4 | 10:30 am-Noon

Join us for an exciting Boccia Workshop on Friday, April 4, from 10:30 a.m.-noon at Joyner Park Community Center.


This is where fun meets strategy! Boccia (pronounced bot-cha) is a precision ball sport, similar to bocce, designed to be inclusive and accessible for individuals of all abilities, including those with physical disabilities.


This workshop will introduce participants to the fundamentals of the game, focusing on coordination, teamwork, and friendly competition.

Developmental Disability Awareness Month


Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions related to the impairments in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas.


During this month, we strive to celebrate contributions from our community members with developmental disabilities and continue to advocate for equal opportunities for these individuals to live their goals and be active community members. 

World Down Syndrome Day


Celebrating Inclusion, Awareness, and Empowerment!


March 21 marks World Down Syndrome Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of individuals with Down Syndrome. This day serves as an opportunity for people around the world to cone together, learn more about Down syndrome, and highlight the importance of embracing diversity.

What is SPIRIT Wake Forest?


SPIRIT Wake Forest is our way of identifying the initiatives, activities and events offered by the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department's Specialized Programs & Inclusion. It stands for Specialized Programs and Inclusion Resources for Individuals Throughout Wake Forest. 


Our staff has a wide variety of experience working with people of all physical, emotional, and cognitive abilities.


We offer fun, adaptive, and inclusive recreation opportunities in our community including adaptive sports, social and fitness programs, and after school activities - with more on the way.
