Dear Friends,
Many of you have heard by now that Father Jim was scheduled for a follow up appointment to have a biopsy on his tongue to evaluate whether the growth was cancerous. The update is that he had the biopsy and CT scan on Monday and is waiting for results. He sends his love and gratitude to each of you. Fr. Jim will be taking a week off to heal from the biopsy, but he is doing well so far. Your prayers and his pain meds are working. He is doing fine for food, so you don’t need to send or drop any off to his house. If you would like to reach out, please text him, or send in cards instead of calling. This will help preserve him from having to talk too much, which will help reduce the pain from the biopsy.
|
This week, one of our staff members, Ruth Cowing, offered a beautiful quote when talking about this journey we are on with Fr. Jim. She said, “tough medical news is often hard to reconcile/accept, yet I have always been heartened by the surprising moments of grace that can emerge.” This is so true! God’s grace always shows up for us, and it will show up for Jim too! Thanks to so many of you who are praying, and continue to pray for him.
| We have a staff person in need of a car. If you have one you are willing to donate directly, please give me a call at (585) 325-1180 x117 and I will connect you. |
Mother’s Day is fast approaching! Yanina Rivera, a mother from our parish, will be our guest speaker this year at our May 11 & 12 Mother’s Day Liturgies.
|
Join us for our 25th Anniversary Silver Ball at the Holiday Inn Hotel on State Street, Saturday, May 18th at 6:30 pm. We are looking forward to gathering as a community to celebrate God’s amazing work in our Spiritus community. You can wear anything silver! I am trying to decide whether to wear a party dress, or my silver Spiritus T-shirt. The best part will be that we are together! You can purchase your tickets below, or at the masses.
As we are planning our Program Book for the evening’s festivities, we still have space for both Tributes and Business Ads! This is a great opportunity to share you/your family’s well wishes and/or reflections! The dimensions are detailed below in “Other News;” the extended deadline is Friday, May 10th at noon. Please email our Director of Communications Ruth Cowing to order!
| |
We send our condolences to Andy and Marianna Beigel on the 5th anniversary death of their granddaughter, Callie Rose Falkner, and apologize for the misspelling of her name in last week’s bulletin.
We send our deepest sympathy to Matt Petrillo on the death of his father, Thomas Petrillo, whose funeral will be May 18th at 10 am, here at Spiritus.

I hope you remember that in all the world, there is no heart for you like God’s!
With love, Rev. Myra

-
We Are What We Eat: A Slow Food Manifesto, by Alice Waters: By eating in a “slow food way,” we, like the farm-to-table community, can prioritize and nurture a different kind of culture, one that champions values such as biodiversity, seasonality, stewardship, and pleasure in work.
-
Saving Us, by Katharine Hayoe: Facts are only one part of the equation; we need to find shared values in order to connect our unique identities to collective action. Not a doomsday narrative about a planet on fire, but a multilayered look at science, faith, and human psychology.
-
The Climate Book, by Greta Thunberg: Eighty-four experts plus Greta write short chapters on their field of expertise. The book covers five areas: How Climate Works; How Our Planet Is Changing; How It Affects Us; What We Have Done About It; What We Must Do Now.

-
An Inconvenient Truth, by Al Gore: A wake-up call to the world, urging everyone to reckon with the undeniable reality of climate change.
