Dear  ,

February..... the month of love.  Love God first!  Then love others - as many as you can.  Tell your spouse you love them.  Tell your kids you love them.  Show kindness and respect to your friends, family, co-workers, and people that you meet.  Have patience.  And most of all, love yourself!  You are one of God's greatest creations.

Groundhog Day

Are you wishing for an early spring?

Groundhog Day has its roots in the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas Day, when clergy would bless and distribute candles needed for winter.  When German settlers arrived in the 1700s, they brought this tradition with them.   It came at the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.   On this  day  in 1887,  Groundhog Day , featuring a rodent meteorologist, is  celebrated  for the first time at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

We want to hear what has you curious or confused.  Send us your questions to Tim Feeney at  tfeeney@st.philip-neri.org.

Valentine's Day

Saint Valentine's Day, also known as Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a holiday observed on February 14 each year.  It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a holiday in most of them.

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.  In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").  In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver's heart", as well as to children, in order to ward off Saint Valentine's Malady.  Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.  Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

Catholic Schools Week

Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2019 is January 27 - February 2. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2019 is "Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve.  Lead.  Succeed." Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.
