Greetings SPN Families,
As we complete the first week of Lent, I am reminded of a theme that comes up in my spiritual reading quite a bit, which is celebrating the hardships and challenges we encounter because they help us to turn toward God. “Consider it all joy whenever you are enveloped in various trials. These are gifts from Me: reminding you to rely on Me alone… Seek Me first and foremost; then the rest of your life will fall in place piece by piece.”
Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Sometimes our prayer might just be, “Help me, Lord,” coupled with a trusting and confident heart, or “Thank you, Lord,” coupled with a grateful heart. Giving can come in many forms with the Rice Bowl being a helpful tool for remembering to donate to those in need. Fasting need not only be abstaining from food or drink.
Consider fasting from worry, and feast on God’s care;
fast from discouragement and feast on hope;
fast from judging others, and feast on God living in them;
fast from facts that depress, feast on facts that uplift;
fast from suspicion, feast on truth;
fast from bitterness, feast on forgiveness;
fast from harsh words, feast on words that build others up;
fast from thoughts that weaken, feast on promises that inspire;
fast from anger, feast on gratitude;
fast from self concern, and feast on compassion for others.
As we journey through Lent, be present to the possibilities of renewal and rebirth in your life as we prepare for the hope of the Resurrection on Easter.
Peace,
Ms. Thomas
