A Message from Outgoing SPR President Bruce Bartholow

Dear SPR Colleagues,

I hope this message finds each of you keeping yourselves healthy and as well as possible. This unprecedented moment finds us all preparing for the second virtual SPR conference in a row, and only the second in SPR’s long history. Personally, I am ending an equally unprecedented second year as SPR’s President. Although my term as SPR President has been marked by numerous challenges, most brought about by the global pandemic, serving as SPR’s President has been an incredible honor and one of the highlights of my professional career. I first attended SPR as a postdoc in 2000. Back then, I had only been “doing” psychophysiology for about two years and felt overwhelmed by all there was to learn, but also extremely excited about all that psychophysiological science had to offer. I still feel that way today. I am re-energized each time I attend an SPR conference or read articles authored by SPR members describing their elegant work. I am inspired by and proud of the scientific contributions made by SPR members, and I am equally proud to call many of you my personal friends.

I will close by expressing my sincere gratitude for having had the opportunity to serve as SPR’s President, and with a special note of thanks to the outstanding Officers (Secretary Chris Larson, Treasurer Erin Hazlett, Past-President Ursula Hess, Presidents-Elect Markus Ullsperger and Andreas Keil) and Board of Directors with whom I have been privileged to serve. Finally, here’s hoping that, by this time next year, we have all made our travel plans for SPR 2022 in Vancouver, BC.

Best,
Bruce Bartholow
Outgoing SPR President
A Message from Incoming SPR President Markus Ullsperger

Dear Fellow Members of SPR,

The annual meeting will start very soon – again as a virtual conference. The program offers exciting science and contains a number of additional events that are important for SPR, such as the Diversity and Outreach Committee Event, the Presidential Symposium, the Faces of the Future Flash Talks, the SPR Anniversary Event, and the Saturday Night Social on Gather.Town. But still – we will miss the personal interactions, unexpectedly bumping into someone we haven’t seen in years, chatting in the hallways, and going to dinner with friends and colleagues. We very much hope that we can have an in-person meeting in 2022 and catch up on the many things we have missed over the last 20 months.

As you know, 2020 was the first time in SPR's history that terms for elected positions within the Society were extended. With the 2021 Annual Meeting, however, the elected new SPR Officers and Board members will take up their positions and for others their term will end after they will have served longer than any of their predecessors. I want to take this opportunity to extend my personal thanks to each of them for their dedication to keeping SPR moving forward during this very trying time. In particular, I would like to mention our President, Bruce Bartholow, our Secretary, Chris Larson, and the Program Chair, Dan Foti, who have guided SPR through these difficult times. The incoming Secretary Rebecca Silton and I can consider ourselves fortunate to take over a Society in good shape! We will work hard to keep the Society’s momentum and prepare it to prosper in the future.

I wish you a great and productive Annual Meeting and hope to see you in person in 2022.

Sincerely,
Markus Ullsperger
Incoming SPR President

You will notice that the timing of events for this year’s Annual Meeting is a bit different than the typical conference schedule. We have made a concerted effort to make the meeting as accessible as possible for all attendees around the globe. With this in mind, each day of the Annual Meeting has been split between an "early" session (morning in North America, afternoon in Europe) and a "late" session (evening in North America, morning in Asia/Australia), with a break mid-day. This way, more attendees will hopefully be able to access the conference events.

Of course, no one time works well for everyone, so this schedule is asking for some compromises from all. Thank you for your understanding, and we are looking forward to an outstanding SPR Annual Meeting!

What SPR is All About: The Psychophysiology!
  • The heart and soul of SPR – in addition to the SPR Blues Band of course – is our knowledge of and rigorous approach to psychophysiology.
  • SPR is identifying ways to make its long-standing and ever-evolving expertise even more accessible to members.
  • Psychophysiology is an interdisciplinary science at the interface of brain, body, and behavior. But, do your colleagues, students, and others outside of SPR realize the many possibilities of what “Psychophys is”?
  • Psychophys IS cognitive/social/affective neuroscience.
  • Psychophys IS child and lifespan development.
  • Psychophys IS the study of emotion, cognition, decision-making, behavior, and implicit attitudes.
  • Let us know what Psychophys means to you by answering “Psychophys is…..” and sharing your thoughts on social media. Don’t forget to tag us @therealspr!
Updates from the Diversity & Outreach Committee
This year’s Annual Meeting has some exciting new elements and events!

  • We have coordinated with the Program Committee to structure the schedule to better accommodate a global audience (see above). While we hope to be returning to in-person meetings next year, we also plan to continue working on ways to make conferences accessible to those for whom travel is prohibitive.
  • Join us at 10:30 a.m. EDT on October 14th for the inaugural President’s Symposium on Diversity, Equity and Representation. We have an exciting collection of speakers whose research covers two related topics: mechanisms underlying bias and the physiological impact of discrimination.
  • Join us at 12:30 p.m. EDT on October 16th for a presentation and discussion with Aparna Joshi, Arnold Family Professor of Management at Penn State. Dr. Joshi’s research expertise is in the area of intentional inclusivity, and she will be discussing the importance of allyship in fostering inclusivity and representation in academia.

Student/Trainee Connection
SPR has a strong commitment to mentorship. Passing along the tricks of the trade in psychophysiology often requires an “apprenticeship” model. Even more, Society members are committed to the scientific and professional development of trainees at all levels.

From student poster awards to grants for psychophysiology-related training experiences, and from early career development panels to social events, SPR offers many opportunities for interaction among members at all stages. It is this continuity -- even with mentoring up through the transition to tenure and ultimately Full Professor -- that is one of the Society’s hallmarks.

Trainee-specific opportunities:

  • Student Poster Awards: Up to 10 students will be selected to receive a poster award ($300). Winners will be announced at the Annual Meeting.
  • Family Care Grant: This is a relatively new opportunity to help defray the costs of family care responsibilities for SPR attendees (up to $400 per family).
  • Student SPR Travel Awards: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, SPR will not award Student Travel Awards for 2021. Please watch for announcements concerning 2022 awards.
  • Research Fellowship Training Awards: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, SPR will not award Research Travel Awards for 2021. Please watch for announcements concerning 2022 awards.
