Dear  ,
Letter from the Editor
H

I just celebrated my birthday month.  I celebrated with family and friends, with cake, peanut butter pie, wine, dinner out (many times), more wine, presents, pampering, and more wine.  I'm another year older and getting up there in years, but I am still able to have a good time and enjoy my life.  I am still able to stay active.  I am still able to train for marathons, run races and plan for even more races, like maybe an SPRR ladies Ragnar Race.  People have said I'm a little crazy to still run like I do, but I don't care, because I'm happy.

Running has it's ups and downs, just like life.  Things go smooth as you run on level ground, but then there's a mountain to get over.  I've learned, as a runner, to power over those mountains, get to the peak and then run with ease on the downhill.  It certainly isn't easy in running or in life.  Neither one will be all smooth going.  Both will have its bumpy parts and uphill climbs.  Both will have rough patches.  I try not to let the bad days, in running or in life, bring me down.  I try to hang on and smile through it all,  because I'm happy.

So, whatever your running or your life gives you, be happy-stay happy.  Don't give up when things get tough.  Power through those bad days that life throws at you.  Don't give up on your running either, especially when you think things can't get any worse.  They may, but stick with it and you'll make it through.  I did.  And even though I'm much slower now, I love my running life still, because I'm happy.

Enjoy your journey,
Ginger
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It's About Time

One of the biggest challenges most athletes have is finding the time to workout. Virtually all of my clients have complained to me at one time or another that they don't have enough time in their schedule, and workouts sometimes take a back seat to the time they need to spend with families, careers, eating, sleeping, and chores, i.e. life's priorities. What's the solution?

My first suggestion is to be realistic about your life's priorities, and then set realistic expectations about your athletic or fitness goals within those priorities. For example,  if you're planning to race a marathon, make sure you have enough hours in the week to get in the time you need to prepare properly. On the opposite side of the coin, don't plan to train and race in the same year that you're starting a family or building a new house. The needed hours just won't be there and something will suffer; hopefully not your family.

Second, choose a time of day that's best for you and allows you to do your workouts within your other life priorities. And make that your routine. Mornings tend to be the best time for many people. Doing your workout first thing, before the rest of the day "gets in the way" is usually a win-win. I'm always amazed and impressed by those people who wake up each morning at an ungodly pre-dawn hour so they can run, swim, bike or hit the gym before their workday begins. One guy I know is up most mornings at 3:45 am . He's out the door at 4:15 for his workout and at his job (at McDill AFB) by 7 am . That's dedication! Others choose the afternoon or evening because it's better for them. The time of day is less important than your ability to make it work for you. Do whatever works best and stick to it.

At SPRR, we have group training runs seven days a week. Most are in the morning, starting at 6:00 or 6:30 , so you can meet up and run with the group, and still have time to get to work or wherever you need to be later in the morning. And there are several runs later in the day, too. Check out the club's website at www.sprr.org to get more details including the names and contact information of the run coordinators.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOMINEES

The SPRR Board of Directors elections will be held November 10 at the General Membership Meeting.  Here is the slate of nominees to date:

Frank Adornato - I am asking for your vote to continue on the SPRR Board of Directors for the calendar year 2016.

I have been involved in sports and fitness for more than 50 years.   I began competing in the sport of triathlon in 1985, and I am a 5-time Ironman including two finishes at the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. I have traveled throughout the United States and internationally to train and compete. I have also raced many "fresh start" marathons including NYC (3x) and the Kona Marathon where I was age group champ M 55-59.

My educational background includes a college certification as a Fitness Specialist, complementing a graduate degree in science.   I was an invited member of the Fitness Specialist Advisory Committee at Raritan Valley College, and I was the Strength & Conditioning coach for the Somerset Valley YMCA swim teams.

I have written more than one hundred articles on fitness, and I speak to corporate and community groups on the subject of fitness and its positive impact on personal and corporate productivity.

I am the author of several books and many e-books covering a wide variety of topics on fitness, wellness and competition.

I served as President of the Board of Directors for RAPS (1991-1994), an international regulatory professionals society, and as President of the Board of Directors for the Kaulana HOA in Kona Hawaii (2006-2010). I believe I can continue to provide a service to the Board and the SPRR members based upon my background, education, and experience.

Thank you.

NOTE: Frank has also served as President of the SPRR Board of Directors this past 2015 year.

Ginger Herring - Ginger has been a member of the St. Pete Road Runners since January 2007.  She has served on the Board of Directors for the past seven years, including two years as President, one year as Vice-President and six years as editor of Up to Speed, the SPRR newsletter.

Ginger has leadership skills developed as Coordinator of the Annual Fund at Stetson University College of Law, Director of the Annual Fund at Eckerd College, and Coordinator of Planned Giving at the Pinellas Education Foundation.  She has created, organized and directed the Stetson Law Run at Stetson University College of Law and the Pel-I-Can Run (now known as the Triton Run) at Eckerd College.

Ginger has been running for 26 years. She has run every race distance from 5K to Marathon and is training for her 26th marathon at Space Coast in November.   She still likes to compete but is trying to practice what she preaches, and that is to enjoy the journey.   Ginger is passionate about running and would welcome the opportunity to help further the mission of the St. Pete Road Runners.

Vicki Linkovich - Vicki, a seven year member of SPRR, calls herself the resident turtle and has served on the SPRR Board for five years.  Vicki enjoys the social aspect of the club and has found when you run with a group the miles go by quickly.  Vicki, a CPA, retired from Verizon after 25 years.  She currently works part-time for a CPA firm during tax season and is Treasurer of her homeowners association and as Treasurer of SPRR.

Doug Schiller - Doug's running experience spans over 36 years and over a thousand races including 16 Boston's plus 13 NYC marathons and others.  He is currently race director for the SPRR Beach 5K Series along with a few of the area races you enjoy.  During 1988 and through 1995, as a member of the Bedford, NH Lions, Doug directed two half marathons, and six 20K race events of which four were USA T&F NE Grand Prix races.  This involved the entire process of forming committees, seeking sponsors, permits, and working with timing companies.  At the present time, Doug is serving on the SPRR Board of Directors and would like you to consider his candidacy for another term.

Don Rasdall- Don currently holds the position of Senior Business Development Officer at UPS Capital and manages clients in the Southeast United States. UPS Capital is a business unit of UPS that develops risk mitigation solutions for global supply chains. Don began his UPS career in 1985 as a delivery driver in St. Petersburg, Florida. After 2 years as a driver, Don moved into UPS management where he has held various positions over the years.

Don holds a Bachelor degree in both Marketing & Commercial Art from Troy State University, in Alabama. In 1998, Don completed his Master's in Business and is moving towards his Ph.D. next. Don has also completed a Logistics & Engineering Management certification at Georgia Tech University. Other training includes Project Management, Business & Marketing Simulation, Toast Masters, Financial Management and Sales Planning.

Don, his wife Lourdes and daughters Jessica & Catalina, reside in the Tampa Bay area. Don was born and raised in St. Petersburg area.

As for running.... Don started running in High School at Clearwater Central Catholic where he was part of the 76, 77, 78 State Champion Cross Country team. Don continued running while attending Troy University. After about a 15 year hiatus from running, he started back by completing his first marathon at Disney. Since then he has completed 8 marathons and over 35 half marathons (15 in one year). Don has run Ragnar Relays and participates in triathlons. He stays active with the St. Pete Road Runners club and is part of the world famous SPRR Amigo's.

Kelly Shotts - Kelly is a relatively new runner. The freedom of needing nothing but a pair of shoes and being able to dash off, whenever and wherever, always held appeal, but was something she thought she could never do. After surviving (and relishing!) forced runs during a boot camp class and hearing stories from friends and co-workers about the fun they had doing RAGNAR relays, she was finally compelled to take up the sport.   In April 2014, she started training on her own using a free app. Luckily, a neighbor and SPRR member, Nancy Brannan, spotted her struggling around the sidewalks of the 'hood and reported her to Ben Fudge, who was gracious enough to save her from her smart phone and provide her with real training.   Shortly after, she joined the St. Pete Road Runners and began participating in group runs. The first Beach Race of 2014 was her first ever 5K.   Since then, she completed the entire Beach Series, as well as several other 5K's, including one in Canada.   She also ran the Miami-to-Key West RAGNAR with the Conchy Tonchin' Team in February 2015.
Kelly moved to St. Petersburg in 2008. She has a Masters in Marine Science. She lives with her elderly cat, Valentino (Tino), she found as a stray on an island on Valentine's Day 1998. In addition to running, she loves stand-up paddle boarding, hiking, biking, and travel, as well as more sedentary pursuits such as live concerts and local theater.
Kelly is very appreciative of the guidance, support, and friendship she has received from Ben and all of the St. Pete Road Runners, and would be honored to serve on their Board of Directors.

Meghan Brunelli - Originally from Rhode Island, Meghan Brunelli decided to make Florida her permanent home in 2001 after finishing a bachelors in communications at the University of Tampa. She spent a decade working hard to make several bosses richer before she embarked on a "second-chance journey," quitting her day job and enrolling in a Biology degree program at St Petersburg College. She will graduate from USF with a master's degree in Library and Information Science this summer, as well as from St. Petersburg College with a Web Development Specialist Certificate. Meghan began running in 2009 after a 21-day tour of Italy caused her to outgrow every pair of shorts and elastic waistband skirt that she owned. Since then, she has run about 40 5Ks, 40 half-marathons in nine different states and one in Niagara Falls, Canada. She made her ultra-running debut at this year's Tick Tock Ultra in Lakeland, completing 45 miles in 12 hours, and she has several more long-distance adventures lined up for 2016. Meghan resides on the other side of the Skyway, with a yard full of chickens and wild hogs. Taca, a stray dog she snuck home from Puerto Rico, is the reigning champ of the Gulfport Flying Mullet One Mile Doggie Dash.

Samantha Tallyn - Hello, my name is Samantha Tallyn. Per the request, a little bit about me:
I moved to St. Petersburg with my husband almost three years ago from Pensacola, FL. I am currently an accountant for Morales and Associates. I started running a few years ago and fell in love with running after my first 5K. I have run with the Road Runners for the speed workouts and starting joining the weekend runs as well. I have completed three half marathons and am currently training for my first full marathon in November. I also enjoy surfing, yoga, and climbing.

In St. Petersburg, I have recently served on the board for the St. Petersburg Young Professionals as their Leadership Development and Treasurer. I have various experiences with event planning, membership, fund raising, sponsorships, and finance. I love working with others and would love the opportunity to work on the SPRR Board of Directors and with the club members.

Kim Fudge -
I always loved running...
it was something you could do by yourself,
and under your own power.
You could go in any direction,
fast or slow as you wanted,
fighting the wind if you felt like it,
seeking out new sights
just on the strength of your feet
and the courage of your lungs.
-Jesse Owens

I have been involved with running at various levels for over forty years. I started running when I was just eleven years old, but I really didn't know what I was getting into! My father, Ben Fudge, had been running for five years when he encouraged my brother and me to try the sport. I think that he saw the positive opportunities that running had offered him and wanted the same for us. Also, the early seventies was an especially heady time for young girls and women to participate in races. The support for us was very strong despite the infamous photograph of Jock Semple's attempt to pull Kathryn Switzer from the Boston Marathon!

The very first running club that I joined had its own women's team. I remember being amazed at the ages of some of the women- could you be over 30 or even 40 and really run?  Weren't these women too old?   Now here I am at 54 eating my own words!

I spent my teenage years running intensely, logging 50-70 miles per week and even completing my only marathon (thus far!) at 14 years old. When I reached my twenties, I wasn't running at all due to a back injury. I made a comeback at 32 shortly after giving birth to my youngest son and I haven't stopped since! Currently, I enjoy running in half marathons and entering a trio of races throughout the year with my oldest son. I also enjoy yoga, strength training and hiking. Although I have traveled back and forth to the St. Petersburg area for more than 6 years, I still consider myself a new resident- having just married club member Ernie Glode on June 27th!!

Prior to moving to the tropics, I was an active community member in my hometown of Andover, MA, serving on the Youth Board of my church for 3 years in addition to being a
part of both the school and district wide Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). I also worked as an advocate for special needs children and a reading specialist in the state of Massachusetts.

I believe I possess the energy, enthusiasm and organizational skills to work on behalf of the greater SPRR community.

~Kim-Marie Fudge

Barbara Childs - Barbara Childs is the Executive Vice President of a public policy think tank. She oversees the educational and training programs that include operations in 38 states as well as 8 countries. Barbara is a native of the United Kingdom. She earned a double bachelor degree in political science and history from Queens College. She also holds a Masters degree in Education, as well as a music degree.

Barbara has been running for a decade. She is the co-founder of Witness Fitness Athletic Club in Beijing, China, that promotes running, fitness and nutrition. She has completed marathons on 3 continents for various charities from the Chinese orphanage she founded with her husband to Veterans Aid in the UK and Wounded Warriors. She still competes regularly in races from marathons to 5Ks.

Barbara started a collegiate girls field hockey program and served as a collegiate coach. She has served as race founder and director for several races in the US and Asia.   Barbara serves as a trustee/board member on several philanthropic organizations.

Barbara came into contact with the St. Pete Road Runners in 2011 when she made a trip to the Tampa/St. Pete area for business.   Since that time, she has continually joined SPRR on various runs including the Tuesday night speed workouts and morning beach runs. She has made several friends in the club, but her first contact with the cub was with Ben Fudge. Barbara and her husband of 15 years now reside in St. Petersburg, FL.

Jennifer Bumbalough - Jennifer is a native Floridian and has lived in many parts of the state. She thinks Pinellas County is by far the best place to live.

Jennifer started running later in life. She has been a member of Tampa Bay Fit since 2008, where she coached for 3 years and has been the co-organizer for the last 2 years.   She is an RRCA Certified Coach.
Jennifer has been a member of SPRR for one year and would like to be more active in the club and the running community by serving on the SPRR Board of Directors.

Jennifer supports her running life, by being a CPA and attorney. She has worked for the American Cancer Society for 10 years and her current position is Senior Corporate Counsel.

HEARD AROUND THE TRACK

Don Rasdall ran a 70.3 triathlon in Augusta, GA.  Here is what he reported:

Well, I finished the 70.3 mile vertical, which is a good thing.  A little slower than I wanted but was pleased with the final results.  The bike ride, which was mostly in SC was hilly for this Florida guy.  My legs were beat when I started my 13.1 run.  There were 3400 athletes at this event.  It was the first time swimming in a wetsuit.  I missed the warm Gulf of Mexico and pool.  Next up is Miami at the end of the month.  I got to meet James Brown (statue).  Had a great time in Augusta, GA.

And, here is Don in Miami:

Met Tony Kanaan this morning. Indy driver. Very windy here. Not sure if swim yet as we wait judges to rule on safety. Bike will be killer in the Everglades with no trees or buildings to block wind.... Good training day:))
                                   ***********************************************************************

Congratulations to Deb Robinson. She was the 2nd Female Finisher in the Flying Mullet 5K in Gulfport. Taca took 1st Overall for the second year in a row in the One Mile Doggie Dash.

                                 **************************************************************************
Donnamarie Hehn did a race on the Pacific Beach.  She ran 36:45, placing 10th in her age group on soft sand.  She said it was rough, but a fun race.
                                 **************************************************************************

Sylvia Crowhurst writes, "Wonder Woman whooped the 8k trail race this morning at Weedon Island! 3rd in 10 year age group! Way to go Laurie Germann."

Congratulations to Karen Lopez for her great race at Weedon Island.

Here's our SPRR Tri Ladies at Lycra and Lace.  Vicki, Janice, Pam, Sylvia and Allison all did a great job.  Sylvia was so very excited to complete her first triathlon.  Congratulations to you all.
