Preparing for Kindergarten at SPS
Kindergarten brings big changes for kids. So much is new for kindergarteners, and kids change so much during the kindergarten year. As you prepare for kindergarten, whether for the next school year or a few years down the road, it’s helpful to talk about going to school and being a kindergartener.
If you can share your excitement with your child, it will help them look forward to it. Talk to your child about making new friends and meeting new people, and practice this when you have the opportunity. Simply talk to them about what kindergarten is and answer their questions and concerns. This will help them be less nervous and more aware of what will come.
In general, it’s helpful to gradually help your student build independence by learning how to do things for themselves, like learning how to zip and unzip coats and jackets, how to manage the bathroom routine on their own, and how to eat and clean up at mealtimes.
As always, reading to and talking with your child about what you’ve read is beneficial. Bringing math into daily interactions, such as counting chocolate chips when you are making cookies or counting spaghetti strands before you cook the noodles, can also help build number sense. Helping your child develop fine motor skills through coloring, crafts, puzzles, or sewing can positively impact kindergarten readiness.
In the meantime, cherish every moment. Meet your child where they are at and take small steps toward getting ready for kindergarten.
