Three New SPS Cohorts Launching Soon!

We are excited to offer three new opportunities in the coming months for hospitals to participate in active testing around harm prevention via new improvement cohorts. New cohort launches include:

  • Nephrotoxic Acute Kidney Injury (NAKI) Improvement Cohort: We have redesigned this cohort and will launch with a new quality improvement strategy focused on preventing exposure to highly nephrotoxic medications.

  • Unplanned Extubations (UE) Improvement Cohort: We are relaunching this cohort with the goal of identifying additional interventions that will lead to further UE reduction in the NICU.

  • Safety Disparities Improvement Cohort: This cohort will focus on understanding and addressing potential disparities in bundle observation processes by race, ethnicity, and language.

All SPS project managers and quality leaders will receive three separate communications in the coming months with full details and an invitation to participate in these cohorts. As a reminder, you are not required to participate in any (or all) of these cohorts, though we hope you consider with your team if participation may be meaningful for your hospital.

We understand and support network hospitals’ prioritization of safety efforts. While these cohorts will all launch in the coming months, we do not expect hospitals to volunteer to participate in all three efforts simultaneously, due to the rigors of active improvement testing. Please do not hesitate to reach out to SPS if you have questions.

Interim and Three-Year Network Goals Update

Thank you for participating in our interim goal period, which ended June 30, 2023! SPS is pleased to share an update on the interim goal results and progress toward our three-year goals. Please click here to review the goal summary.

Additionally, you may review the network goal progress via the SPS Network Dashboard on SharePoint. If you would like to check your hospital’s status for the interim goals, click here. We look forward to continuing to work with you on our mission toward zero harm!

UE Special Cause Investigation and Chart Shifts

We are excited to share that we shifted our UE-ICU and UE-NICU charts on Aug. 22! UE-ICU had a provisional shift of 0.590 to 0.530 (10% reduction), and UE-NICU had a provisional shift of 0.751 to 0.699 (6.9% reduction)!

This equates to approximately 372 fewer children harmed during the special cause investigation period (Aug. 2022 – June 2023)!

We will recalculate the centerlines once we have complete July 2023 data, and will be reaching out to hospitals who contributed to the reduction to learn more. Stay tuned for more findings in the coming months.
