Presidents Message

I AM SO PROUD OF YOU ALL!!!

At the last minute….

You showed up with amazing artwork.

You helped organize the shows.

You helped hang them.

You are an amazing group of artists!

WE are an amazing Art League!

THANK YOU!

I am so excited to arrive back in the desert in October. I am seriously missing my art friends and looking forward to seeing you all again.

With only a few more months as Co-President of the Art League, I have been considering what volunteer job I might do next year. Deb Nealy, who is also going off the board, and I had a conversation about where we feel we could be of the greatest help. We have both decided to help with Education. We just love all that the Art League does to help people find their art voice and their artistic passion by experimenting with various art mediums and continually learning. We really want to help develop our educational offerings. We will be working with Darilyn Ronn to continue the Art 101 Classes and we are looking for more Mini Workshop opportunities to offer as well.

The 2025 – 2026 busy season at the Santa Rita Art League will be full of all things art. It warms my heart to know I can continue to be a part of it.

See you in October!

Jeani Gustafson, SRAL President

PS: This Newsletter has a LOT of information. I know it is long but please read all of it or you might miss out on something you would like to be involved in.

Thursday, October 2nd

3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Our October informal gathering is being held in the Studio from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 2. This is a great time to meet with your fellow artists in a relaxed, unstructured, friendly environment to talk about art or life.

The theme for this meetup is “Help! I’m Stuck!” If you have a work of art in progress and you’re not sure where to go next, bring it along for some friendly feedback. Of course, any work in progress, whether you’re “stuck” or not, or work you’ve finished is always welcome.

As usual, feel free to bring a snack to share along with your beverage of choice. We’ll see you there!

SRAL Monthly General Meeting

&

Artist Demo

1:00-3:00pm • October 9, 2025 • Anza Room

Demo Artist:

Sonsoles Shack

“Falling in Love with Pan Pastels”

Demo Description:

Ten years ago, I saw the great David Jon Kassan painting one of his stunning portraits with PanPastels, and I have been hooked ever since. I love the soft quality of PanPastels, their ease of application, the fact that they are fully erasable, and have low dust. I will explain the differences and similarities with traditional pastels. Since my primary focus is painting animals, I will paint a study of a cat or a horse, ...if possible, both. I will explain how to achieve drawing accuracy to get a likeness, with emphasis on correct value shapes, leaving those pesky (but fun!) details to the end. I hope you can join me!

Bio:

Sonsoles grew up within a family of artists in Madrid, Spain and has been drawing and painting since childhood. She is an artist fascinated with portraiture of people and animals, and the depiction of light and dramatic contrasts, which is a common theme in most of her work.

Her art education includes classes at the University of Maryland, the Montpelier Arts Center (MD), and the Scottsdale Artists School (AZ). She studied with renowned instructors like Amery Bohling, Phil Beck, James Coulter, Robert Goldman, Ray Roberts, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, David Harlan, Cody DeLong, Barbara Mulleneaux and Chris Saper.

She has been an art instructor for 16+ years, and teaches private classes and workshops at the Cactus Wren Art Gallery in Tubac, AZ, the Tubac School of Fine Art, and the Community Performance and Arts Center (Green Valley, AZ), where she also shows her work. In addition her paintings have been shown at Ben’s Fine Art Gallery, the Mountain Artist Guild Gallery, the Southern Arizona Artists Guild, the Phippen Art Museum in Prescott, AZ. More information about Suny is available on SRAL Demo Webpage.

Announcing: the 2025 Members’ 2nd Annual

Judged Exhibit

Theme: Chaos and Harmony

New! Here are the details for the upcoming SRAL art exhibit in December. As always, our popular art shows at Canoa Hills GVR Lobby are fun in which to enter a piece as well as an opportunity to either win an award or sell your piece (with no commission). Please read, print, and save the important details in the prospectus for the theme, the entry date, etc. Click here for the entry form. Questions should be sent via email to the exhibit co-chairs: Susan McKelvy (SusanM@SantaRitaArt.org) and Rhonda Fisher (RhondaF@SantaRitaArt.org). Below are some ideas for the exhibit theme, Chaos and Harmony.

Definition of Chaos and Harmony

Chaos is defined as completely unordered, unpredictable, or confusing, i.e., a total lack of restraint or control. Synonyms are disorder, disarray, discord, helter-skelter, lawlessness, and turmoil. In contrast, harmony is a state of agreement, accord, balance or unity among people or things, characterized by peacefulness, a pleasing combination of elements, or fitting together well. More information on the theme and the judge, Greg Wallace, are available on SRAL's website.

MASTERS SHOW

It is time to start your paintings for the Masters Show 2026! It is tentatively scheduled from mid- February until the end of March at the West Center. More info to follow.

Recreating a Master painting is a time-honored tradition for developing artistic skills. It is a great way to try out a new technique, improve on your own style, and have some fun!

This year the special section will be for animal artists. Some artists to consider are: George Stubbs, Paulus Potter, Jan Fyt, Arthur Wardle, Sir Edwin Landseer, Charles Burton Barber, Rosa Bonheur, and John James Audubon. There are many others! Of course, an animal painting is optional, and you may choose any artist's painting that you consider to be a Master.

Due to copyright laws, an artist must be DECEASED for at least 70 years to be copied legally, so that would be from 1956 and prior years.

Due to the rise of A.I. (artificial intelligence) with fake interpretations of famous artists online, there will be a line on the entry form to enter the provenance of the painting that you are reproducing. Examples: title of the book it was in, name of the museum it is hanging in, who's personal collection it is from, or when/where it was sold at auction (like Christy's). It is no longer enough to just take an image off of a Google search. Our library has many great books to look through and check out.

Each member may enter 2 paintings.

No size limit, but be reasonable.

No entry fee. Prizes: Artist's Choice ribbons

SRAL hanging guidelines must be followed

Please contact Cheryl Schaeffer CherylS@SantaRitaArt.org

Volunteering at SRAL!

🌟 Looking for New Leaders in 2026 🌟

As we look ahead to 2026, several Board of Directors positions will be opening, and we’d love for you to consider stepping into one of these important roles. Our current leaders have served faithfully for many years, and now it’s time for fresh perspectives, new ideas, and your unique energy to help guide the Santa Rita Art League forward.

The best part? You don’t have to do it alone. Many of these positions can be shared with a partner, making leadership a team effort.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re “qualified,” here’s the truth: you already are. Throughout your life you’ve built careers, raised families, organized households, and managed busy schedules. Those same skills—leadership, organization, creativity, and teamwork—are exactly what our league needs. Your time, talents, and experience can make a lasting difference in keeping SRAL vibrant, fresh, and thriving for years to come.

👉 Please consider stepping forward in 2026 and lending your leadership to this incredible community of artists. Together, we can keep the Santa Rita Art League strong and inspiring for all.

ABSTRACT WORK GROUP

We are excited to announce a second Abstract Group.

While separate from the long time Abstract SIG, the Learning Abstract SIG

will utilize experimentation, library, You-Tube, and the expertise of abstract artists to support those interested in learning more about this style of painting.

The Abstract SIG group meets on the first Monday of each month and the new Learning Abstract group will meet on the second, third, and fourth Monday’s from 9-12, in the Studio.

This schedule will allow everyone who chooses to participate to also attend the 1st Monday Abstract SIG.

On Monday, October 13th, the Learning Abstract group will begin with a discussion about historical abstract artists and some painting experimentation. Bring your painting supplies (acrylics recommended due to drying time), canvas, and a notebook. No need to register. Contact Brenda Stewart by email BrendaS@SantaRitaArt.org if you have any queries.

ASSEMBLAGE

The Assemblage SIG will have an exhibit of their work in the Desert Hills Lobby starting October 1 through October 31.

The Assemblage Special Interest Group will be meeting September 26 and continue to meet on the 2nd and 4th Fridays, Oct 10 and October 24, at the SRAL studio 1-3pm.

See you there,

Cheryl Schaeffer CherylS@SantaRitaArt.org and Sue Bollig SueB@SantaRitaArt.org, coordinators

COLLAGE/MIXED MEDIA and ACRYLIC

We are meeting the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 1 to 3. The first Wednesday we will have a demo and challenge and share our pieces. Our challenge for October is to choose 3 colors from your environment and black and white if needed to use in a collage, mixed media or acrylic piece. On the third Wednesday bring your supplies and play.

You can contact Janet Johnson by Clicking Here.

FIGURE DRAWING

The Figure Drawing Group meets on the first Saturday of each month from November to April, 9 AM to Noon. We hope to see you then. Contact Lisa Schmit with questions LisaS@SantaRitaArt.org

 LEARNING ABSTRACT

This is a new group that is board approved and coming to you all in mid-October, on three Monday mornings each month, including the second, third, and fourth Mondays.

This group will be a work group, painting in the studio and learning together. We will work with artists from the Abstract SIG (formerly known as the Abstract Briggade) and utilize materials from our comprehensive library, as well as YouTube offerings, and more, to support everyone.

Reach out to Brenda Stewart if you are interested in joining the group or if you are interested in teaching using your medium of choice, or a favorite technique. Otherwise, just plan to attend in October.

OIL PAINTING & PASTEL

We are a friendly, supportive, and informal group that allows our members a scheduled time to paint, share ideas, and techniques. We welcome both beginning and accomplished artists alike!

We meet every Monday from noon to 3:00. Contact Deb Nealy with questions DebN@SantaRitaArt.org

OPEN STUDIO

This popular event occurs every Tuesday from 9AM to 1PM. As recently updated, all members are welcome to use all media types. Oil paint is allowed in the main studio on Monday and Tuesday only, so this is a great time for oil painting, but only an odor-less solvent, such as Gamsol, can be used. Our usual members stop to have lunch at noon.

PLEIN AIR PAINT OUTINGS

Because of the heat, we have decided to meet each week at the venue decided by participants the previous week. We leave early and try to find places with trees and shade. November is our normal date for our regular outings for the month with an email to participants at the end of the previous month.

If interested please send an email with your name, phone number and email address to Nanci Sheppard  NanciS@SantaRitaArt.org

PORTRAIT

The Portrait group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 1:00 to 3:00.

PRINTMAKERS GUILD

Coordinators: Karen Keim and John McGraw

In October, we return to our schedule on the second Wednesday and the fourth Thursday of each month (alternate Thursdays in Nov./Dec due to holidays). To join the e-mail list, or if you have questions, please contact Karen Keim at KarenK@SantaRitaArt.org
