Friends Of The Library

Spotlight on Staff: Luis Dela Cruz, Library Assistant III

For more than 19 years, Luis Dela Cruz has proudly served the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library—as both a volunteer and a staff member. Over the years, he has worked with all our head librarians (only SR staff with this distinction), trained countless staff and volunteers, and witnessed the library’s remarkable growth and transformation.

Luis is a vital part of nearly everything that happens at the library—from helping set up rooms for Summer Reading Programs and adding new books to the collection, to partnering with SRFOL on the beloved Holiday Bookplate program.

If you see him at the library, don’t hesitate to say hello (or howdy!). Luis loves meeting new patrons and visitors who make the Scripps Ranch Library such a special community hub.

Library Closure Update

The planned closure of our library for roof and HVAC replacement—expected to last 6–8 months—has been postponed until the new year. Work on the lower parking lot, which has been on hold for the past 18 months, is anticipated to resume this month.

Book Discussion Group

At our October meeting, the Book Group celebrated with a lively potluck and selected some of the titles for next year’s reading list. While members pitched their book suggestions, we enjoyed a delicious spread of hummus, cheese, chicken skewers, several salads and dips, and a homemade sweet potato pie. It’s always a favorite gathering—our potlucks never disappoint, and everyone leaves with a list of books they’re excited to read.

Since our meeting fell close to Halloween, Megan suggested we dress as literary characters, with extra points for those from books the group had read. Several members joined in the fun, and we had a great time guessing each other’s costumes.

Fourteen books were recommended—ranging from classics and Pulitzer Prize winners to historical fiction and contemporary favorites. After a vote, seven were chosen for the upcoming months. The updated reading schedule will be posted soon on the SRFOL website.

Because of the holidays, our November and December meetings will be held earlier in the month. This month, we’re reading Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris. Join the discussion on Thursday, November 13, from 12:30–2:00 p.m. in the Seminar Room—feel free to bring a brown bag lunch! New members are always welcome.

Next month’s selection is Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, to be discussed on Thursday, December 4. Copies of both books are available at the circulation desk. When the library closes for renovation, we’ll continue meeting at the Mira Mesa Library at noon on the fourth Thursday of each month.

Book Recommendations

This month's recommendation comes from Kelly Verheyden, Supervising Librarian, Central Library

Kelly recommends: Diavola by Jennifer Thorne

“Every year the Pace family selects a destination, rents a house, and spends a week together. This year the destination is the small town of Monteperso, Italy. Anna is not looking forward to spending time with her controlling sister, Nicole, or her judgmental parents, but is excited to see her twin brother Benny. When she arrives at the villa, everything is as she expected, including her brother’s annoying boyfriend. One night, after a couple glasses of wine, Anna, Benny, and the boyfriend use a hidden key to access the villa tower, and things take a turn for the worse. It starts out small, with an infestation of....”. To read Kelly's full review, check out the October 5th, 2025 issue of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
