San Diego in Comic Books Across the Decades

Metropolis… Gotham City… New York City – these are the familiar settings of endless comic books! Chris Ryall (Origins of Marvel Comics, Mighty Marvel Calendar Book, publisher, Syzygy/Image) is here to provide ample visuals and backstories that make the case for San Diego being discussed with the same reverence, thanks to the city’s many appearances in comics over the years.

Chris Ryall is a comic-industry historian and the former President, Publisher, and CCO of IDW Publishing, and executive producer on Netflix’s Locke & Key. He is currently the co-founder of Image Comics imprint Syzygy, a freelance writer/editor/packager, and co-creator of Paramount Studio’s in-development series, The Bullpen.

Join us on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 from 4:00pm - 5:00pm for this Author talk. The event will be held in the Community Room at our library.

2025 Is Coming Soon

Many of you are Annual Members of the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library. Our memberships expire December 31st, but don’t wait for the end of the year. Anyone who joins or renews an annual membership on or after October first will have their membership run through the end of 2025. If you are not a currently a member, this is a great deal: three free months of membership. IF you are a member now this gives you the choice of when to renew. We have six levels of annual membership—from $5 to $100, but all give you a free book when you spend more than $5.00 at Grace’s Book Nook, and priority entrance to our book sales. All membership dollars go to supporting our library. If you really want to show your support and not have to renew annually, just become a Life Member with a contribution of $250 or more. Membership forms are available in the entrance to the library and in Grace’s Book Nook or use our form at https://www.srfol.org/join.htm to join online.

Book Recommendations

This month's recommendation comes from Steven Torres-Roman, Librarian II, Central Library. Steven recommends: The Nice House on the Lake, Volumes 1 and 2, by James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno. "Walter may seem a little off, but he’s bright and has a good heart. He invites ten of his closest friends to a magnificent house, an architectural wonder, on an expanse of beautiful, isolated wilderness. And then … the world ends ... “The Nice House on the Lake” is a creepy, quiet, post-apocalyptic story of love, friendship, obsession, power, and trust, and is a must-read comic for horror fans." To read Steven's full review, check out the September 8, 2024 issue of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
