Special Lecture:  Weird and Wonderful San Diego History

Join us on Wednesday, September 4, at 2 p.m. to hear local author and San Diego Press Club award-winning journalist Jack Innis present three stories from his book San Diego Legends: a Kumeyaay First People's tale, the William Randolph Hearst murder mystery, and the legend of La Loma, about the lone survivor of an 18th-century shipwreck who was raised by our community. This program is provided through Oasis and is sponsored by the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library (SRFOL).

Smoot Contest at the Book Sale

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in the Smoot contest. We had nine participants, and although two were very close, there were no exact guesses. As a result, we awarded consolation prizes.

A special mention goes to the contestant with the most accurate guess—a sophomore at MIT who had the unique opportunity to chat with Oliver Reed Smoot, from the MIT class of 1962, after whom the Smoot measurement is named.

Once again, thank you to all participants for making the contest a success. We look forward to seeing you at future events!

Book Recommendations

August was romance awareness month but anytime is a good time to curl up with a good romance novel. Here are the picks put together by the College Rolando library staff.

Robert Surratt, Manager of Access Services, Central Library, recommends: DJ Screw: A Life in Slow Revolution by Lance Scott Walker. Robert Earl Davis Jr., better known as DJ Screw, was a pioneering Houston disc jockey active throughout the 1990s until his untimely death in November 2000.

DJ Screw: A Life in Slow Revolution gives readers a look at the elusive DJ’s life and successes, from selling tapes hand-to-hand locally to his lasting impact on the broader hip hop community. To read Robert's full review, check out the August 11, 2024 issue of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
