RTI and Reading Disabilities, Hybrid Session

November 10, 2026

Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. The RTI process begins with high-quality Scientifically based instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. Struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning. A multi-tier approach is used to efficiently differentiate instruction for all students.

The Science of Reading for Elementary Teachers (Grades Pk-3), Hybrid Session

November 17, 2026
The Science of Reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world and is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The Science of Reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties. This session will provide participants with strategies to shift practices to those that align with the research in order to improve student outcomes.

The Science of Reading for Secondary Teachers (Grades 4-12), Hybrid Session

November 19, 2026

For educators of middle and high school students, there's no denying the importance of reading for student success. As a result, it's only right to make sure that education programs are based on the most up-to-date science of reading principles. What works for an elementary student will not necessarily work for those slightly older - and specific adjustments may be needed. This workshop aims to examine the "do's and don'ts" when teaching reading to students in grades 4-12 within the context of scientific research by reviewing positive behaviors (what you should do).

Yet, many teachers have limited understanding on how to assess and implement phonological awareness activities in a strategic manner. This session will provide an overview of theoretical framework, hierarchical phonological developmental levels and assessment. We will explore multiple phonemic awareness activities for large and small group instruction. Registrants will participate in activities that can be applied in the classroom.

Differentiation Beyond Worksheets: Multiple Pathways to Mathematical Thinking
October 14, 2026

Mathematics classrooms are filled with learners who think, process, and demonstrate understanding in different ways. Yet too often, instruction relies on a one-size-fits-all approach. In this interactive workshop, educators will explore practical strategies for moving beyond traditional worksheets and creating multiple pathways for students to access, engage with, and demonstrate mathematical understanding. Through hands-on activities, manipulatives, problem-solving tasks, and discussions of Multiple Intelligences, participants will learn how to differentiate mathematics instruction while maintaining high expectations and rigorous learning goals. Educators will leave with ready-to-use strategies that support diverse learners, increase engagement, and promote deeper mathematical thinking for all students.

Sugar and Spice and Not So Nice: Dealing with Relational Aggression and Girl Bullying in Your School

October 20, 2026

Bullying is an age-old issue that is often difficult to eliminate in the school environment. Relational aggression can be particularly hard to address. It is important to provide school staff with strategies for prevention, recognition and intervention. The new Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Law in New Jersey makes it imperative to do just that. What can educators do to combat "Girl Bullying,” the covert forms of bullying that involve manipulating peer relationships to hurt others? Workshop participants will learn how to recognize the various forms of relational aggression, implement successful interventions to address relational aggression, create a positive and safe school environment to eliminate "Girl Wars,” and assist students to become effective upstanders.

Best Practices in School-Age Stuttering Assessment and Treatment
December 10, 2026

This intermediate-level course provides an evidence-based overview of best practices for managing school-age children who stutter and clutter. Stuttering is a multidimensional, multifactorial communication disorder that has long eluded complete scientific understanding. Its complex nature often challenges both clinicians and children in defining, measuring, diagnosing, and fully conceptualizing the disorder. This session will address practical challenges by reviewing current research and outlining effective assessment practices, evidence-based therapy techniques, and strategies for supporting the attitudes and emotions that influence communication. Participants will gain tools to enhance clinical decision-making and improve outcomes for children.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the multidimensional nature of stuttering, including its affective, cognitive, and behavioral components.

2. Identify evidence-based tools and procedures for collecting quantitative data relevant to evaluating a school-age child's stuttering.

3. Identify evidence-based tools and procedures for gathering qualitative information that captures the child's experiences, communication impact, and contextual factors.

4. Develop functional outcomes and write meaningful, contextually relevant goals for children who stutter.

5. Describe indirect therapeutic strategies that support a child's communication environment and overall fluency.

6. Describe direct therapy techniques used to address the core features of stuttering and promote effective communication skills.

7. Explain the importance of addressing attitudes and emotions in a therapy program for students who stutter.

8. Describe intervention strategies for addressing the attitudes and emotions of students in a speech therapy program.

A Free 15-Hour Course on Sheltered English Instruction

Developed by the SRI&ETTC Funded by the NJ Department of Education

Educating students who still are acquiring English proficiency can be complex in an age of high stakes evaluations and assessments as well as college and career-ready standards. English language learners (ELLs) are not monolithic in their educational background, cultural experiences, and ability to adapt to learning environments. However, through well-planned instruction, ELLs can attain challenging academic standards.
