Bad News and Good News:  SRS Budget

Recent media headlines have announced the reduced funding of just $270 million in the President's fiscal 2017 budget plan for the MOX project. Some predict this is the start to ending the project. However, President Barack Obama's fiscal 2017 budget plan, the last one Obama will propose before leaving office next January, is not the final word on the MOX funding. Congress still has to weigh in on this matter. This will be followed closely in the months ahead.

On the good news side, funding for Environmental Management (EM) missions at the Savannah River Site would increase by about $111 million over current funding levels under President Barack Obama's fiscal 2017 budget plan. Additional information about this and the FY17 budget for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) operational missions at SRS will be discussed on March 3 between 3-5 pm at the Aiken Technical College Amphitheater. This event is hosted by the SRS Community Reuse Organization. Below is an ad being placed in local newspapers advertising this event.

German Fuel HEU Environmental Assessment

On February 4, 2016, DOE presented the possibility of accepting spent nuclear fuel from Germany for processing at Savannah River Site and disposal at a yet to be disclosed location. The German fuel is of U.S. origin but was sent to Germany as part of the Atoms for Peace program under President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace initiative. The material was made available to all countries that wanted it for research with the understanding that the U.S. would eventually take it back. As part of the Environmental Assessment released by DOE, the purpose of accepting the material would support a national policy aimed at eliminating highly enriched uranium and converting it into a form "no   longer usable for an improvised nuclear device." The public comments   submitted by the SRSCRO reiterated this objective - click here to view the letter. The 45-day public comment period extends through March 11, 2016.
New Video Features Local Students

In just over four years, college and university partners in our region have developed new education programs that are helping students find careers in the nuclear industry.  More great news is that these programs teach skills that are applicable to multiple industry sectors, where more than 37,000 jobs are coming available locally.  Area students from these programs are part of a new video that tells the story of Advancing Nuclear Skills Regionally (ANSR).  The ANSR program is the result of a partnership
between the SRSCRO, Department of Energy, Aiken Technical College, Augusta Technical College, Augusta University, University of South Carolina Aiken, and the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie.  Hear from the people who are part of this unique program here

February
Fun Facts

1.    February was named after the ancient Roman purification ritual 'Februa'.

2.    Until 713BC, the Romans had no names for January and February, on the grounds that the winter months did not deserve them.

3.    Until Julius Caesar's changes in 45BC, February was the only month with an even number of days.

4.    In Old English, February was called 'Solmonath' (mud month) or 'Kalemonath' (cabbage month).

5.    'February' is an anagram of 'bare fury' (if you are feeling angry) or 'bury fear' (if you are brave).

6.    February is the only month that can pass without a full moon. This last happened in 1999 and will next happen in 2018.

7.    Once every six years, February is the only month that has four, full seven-day weeks.

8.    Much Ado About Nothing is Shakespeare's only play naming February: "You have such a February face, So full of frost, of storm and cloudiness."
