Health Notes from our School Nurse
According to The Food Allergy Research and Education organization (FARE), food allergy is a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition affecting up to 15 million Americans. One in every 13 children has a food allergy-that's about 2 in every U.S. classroom. And every 3 minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room.
In the U.S., the eight most common food allergens are milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish. Food allergy may occur in response to any food, and some people are allergic to more than one food. Food allergies may start in childhood or as an adult.
All food allergies have one thing in common: They are potentially serious. Always take food allergies-and the people who live with them-seriously.
Food allergy reactions can vary unpredictably from mild to severe. Mild food allergy reactions may involve only a few hives or minor abdominal pain, though some food allergy reactions progress to severe anaphylaxis with low blood pressure and loss of consciousness.
Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that comes on quickly and may cause death. Early use of an epinephrine auto-injector is the primary treatment for anaphylaxis. Antihistamines can help relieve some mild symptoms from an allergic reaction, such as an itchy mouth or hives, they cannot stop the life-threatening symptoms of anaphylaxis.

SENIORS
- If you have submitted college applications, BE SURE you are setting up and checking your campus portal for each college. Most colleges communicate with applicants via their portal on their website and others send emails to applicants with updates. Stay informed and meet all deadlines!
- New scholarships posted! See School Loop and Naviance for details and to access the applications.
- Messages from Mrs. Murray, SRVHS Registrar
- Students Applying Using the Common App. Please Note: If you do not need a letter of recommendation from your counselor, you still need to see your counselor to ask them to send your transcript. The Common App requires them to fill out a school report to accompany your transcript even though the college may not require a letter of rec. Further questions? Feel free to ask Ms. Murray in Counseling. Otherwise, drop in to see your counselor during brunch or lunch.
- Does your college require "mid-year transcripts" (aka...7th semester transcripts?) (Most, if not all, Common Application schools do want them, and many out of state and private schools do as well. UC and CSU's only want them if they ASK YOU to send them (check your email/campus portals to know for sure!) See Mrs. Murray's procedure for requesting mid-year transcripts. NOTE: You do NOT request them via the original Naviance method.
JUNIORS & SOPHMORES
- 10th and 11th graders: Did you take the PSAT in October? PSAT scores are due to be released on Dec. 12. If you provided an email on PSAT test day, you will receive an email with instructions on how to set up a College Board account and view your scores. (hint: you can set up the CB account now, and link it to your scores, when you they are posted). See school loop for some helpful hints!

Date: 01/10/2019 (Thu.)
Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Location: SRVHS Library
When we are focused too narrowly on grades and performance, we deny our children the time and energy they need to tackle the demanding work of growing up. In this presentation, parents will explore recent research on topics including homework, sleep, cheating, technology use, academic engagement, and more. Parents will also explore concrete strategies to help reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement, and to support their children's resilience, creativity, and well-being.
This interactive workshop for
San Ramon Valley High School parents includes a PowerPoint presentation, coupled with opportunities for personal reflection, audience participation, and brief discussion activities. Parents will leave with practical strategies to put into practice at home and at school.
