President's Message

As of this writing we are seven (7) weeks away from our Annual Dinner and Auction. This will be the club’s 46th Annual Dinner. This dinner is our largest fund-raising event of the year and determines our agenda for the remainder of the year. That agenda may include conservation projects, youth hunting and shooing activities, our lobbying program and our activities of interest to the membership. In recent years those programs have been scaled back or become non-existent as attendance at the dinner has been in declined.

This year we have changed the location, improved the menu, added inactive activities, and reduced our costs wherever possible; nevertheless, without an increase in attendance this event is in jeopardy. The dinner is a great deal of work, but the Board and committees are committed to continue it as long as there is support for this event.  If this sounds like a plea, that’s because it is. The membership needs to step up and demonstrate that the preservation of the annual dinner and the activates supported by the proceeds from the dinner are important to them.

We are also in the process of establishing a program whereby the membership has the opportunity to support our lobbying efforts. The means to support this vital program will be included on the website very shortly. The hope is that a sufficient number with the membership will sign up for monthly contributions in support of our lobbying activities. Safari Club International does an outstanding job of lobbying and mentoring activities at the national level, but it’s incumbent upon the Chapters to perform these activities at the local level. Those that would curtail our hunting rights and right to bear arms are well funded and ever present in California. Our vigilance in this area goes way beyond writing letters, we testify before legislative committees, Commissions and agencies throughout the state and there is nothing more powerful than packing the hearing room with supporters.  It is unrealistic to believe that these efforts will continue to be paid for out of the pockets of Board members and a handful of volunteers. This activity needs and deserves your support.

SSC Recipe of the Month

PHEASANT BREASTS WRAPPED IN PROSCIUTTO

WITH PARMESAN CHEESE

INGREDIENTS

6 pheasant breasts

6 fresh sage leaves

12 slices of prosciutto

Grated Parmesan cheese

Olive oil

Salt & pepper for seasoning

INSTRUCTIONS

Using a sharp knife, score in a lattice fashion the underside of each pheasant breast. Season each breast with salt and pepper. Finely chop the sage leaves and blend them with the Parmesan cheese. Evenly coat the pheasant breasts with the sage and Parmesan cheese mixture. Lay 2 slices of prosciutto onto each breast and drizzle with olive oil. Cover the breasts with cling film and beat with a mallet until the breasts are about ¼ inches thick. Transfer the breasts, prosciutto side down, into a non-stick frying pan on medium heat. Trickle another small amount of olive oil over the top and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side. If you prefer the prosciutto to be crispy, fry on the prosciutto side for an extra 30 seconds. We usually serve the pheasant breasts with roasted potatoes and our favorite Sauvignon Blanc.

Legislation

We are still sorting through the tremendous number of bills introduced into the state Assembly and Senate this year. It is our intent to have the results of our research out to the membership within the next week, as a separate mailing.

One bill that has attracted attention and has been referred to the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee is AB 1038 by Assembly woman Heather Hadwick. This bill is intended to enhance public safety while preserving the wild nature of bears by requiring the Fish & Game Commission to designate specific seasons during which houndsmen may use dogs, in a non-lethal pursuit of bears. The intent being to reestablish the natural fear bears have of humans by hazing them out of human populated areas with dogs.

The bill would further provide the Commission with the discretion to establish a hunting season where dogs may be used to purse bears for harvest in areas identified as requiring management. The intent being to help bring their overabundant population back in balance with their ecosystem and prey.

The bill was co-sponsored by the California Houndsmen for Conservation and the California Deer Association

  • To accept my responsibility to provide all possible assistance to game law enforcement officers.
  • To waste no opportunity to teach young people the full meaning of this code of ethics.
  • To reflect in word and behavior only credit upon the fraternity of sportsmen, and to demonstrate abiding respect for the game, habitat and property where I am privileged to hunt.
