Walks & Trails: Garden Tour
Charles Cresson’s Hedgleigh Spring Garden
Thursday, May 29th
| | |
This two-acre garden, owned by Swarthmore resident Charles Cresson, has been cultivated by his family for three generations. The garden contains more than 2,000 plant species and varieties, some of which are the original ones planted by Cresson’s grandfather when he created the garden around 1915.
Charles will welcome us, give us the history of this extraordinary Swarthmore property, and accompany us on a stroll through this world-renowned garden. This is peak bloom season, so you may want to bring your camera.
| | |
We suggest footwear appropriate for walking on uneven, grassy surfaces. If the weather is “iffy” find out whether the tour is postponed by calling Dan Snyder 610-457-9149.
Date: Thursday, May 29
Time: 10:30 am
Location: 32 Amherst Avenue, Swarthmore
| | |
Date: Every Friday
Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Trip to Reading Terminal Market, via SEPTA train
Stay tuned for more information about our trip to the Reading Terminal Market!

| |
We have the opportunity to tour the grounds and walk the trails at Pendle Hill on Tuesday, June 3, starting at 10 am. Lloyd Guindon, the buildings and grounds manager, will lead us on an hour long tour.
Here is his description of the tour:
"We will start at the Barn parking lot and walk to "mama beech" behind Main House, "Owens garden", the vegetable garden, our labyrinth, then end in Barn meeting room. "

Walk and Tour
at Pendle Hill
Tuesday, June 3rd
| |
"I will check next week to see if our bookstore is open that morning. I expect the tour to take about an hour and folks should dress to walk on lawns and trails. Thanks, I look forward to meeting the group!”
We can walk the trails on our own afterwards as long as we want.
Unfortunately, the dining services are at limited capacity that week while they do electrical upgrades to the Main House building so we don’t have the option to stay for lunch. Those who choose could bring a bag lunch and sit under the trees and visit after the walk.
Meet at the Swarthmore clock at 9:45 if you would like a ride; if you drive on your own meet in the Barn parking lot at 10:00 am.
Call Beth Lawn (484-431-3096) if you have any questions or concerns about the weather.

Update important information lists so they can resume being useful to the community: One is a directory of local minority-owned businesses, the other is a listing of all local volunteer organizations, with contact information; can be done at home on your schedule; no rocket science involved.
Volunteer opportunities abound within our organization -- something for everyone, something for you!

Help with Rides
Can you offer an occasional ride to our members? Details can be flexible: maybe someone needs a ride TO an appointment but will be picked up by someone else. Or someone has a regular monthly appointment, and one volunteer might be able to provide a ride each month.
Stephanie McDonough, SSCA Administrator, does her best to match those needing rides with those who can provide them. Whether you need a ride or can offer one (or both!), you can reach Stephanie at (484) 437-8272. If you can offer rides, you can let her know your general availability. If you need a ride, please allow at least a few days in advance for the best possibility of a successful match with a driver.
