Tony Shahan, Executive Director of the Newlin Gristmill, will explore the

History of Milling in the MidAtlantic.

Mills have been pivotal in the development of agriculture, entrepreneurship, and commerce. Come hear how the mills have influenced our region.

Tony Shahan has been working with the restoration and operation of historic grist mills since 1992. He is a graduate of the College of the Ozarks and the University of Delaware History and Museum Studies programs.

We’ll meet at the Swarthmore train station and take the Media local into Philadelphia for a visit to the historic Reading Terminal Market.   We’ll have about an hour and a half there for shopping and dining. Information about this adventure is here. 

The Market is one of America’s largest and oldest public markets, housed since 1893 in this National Historic Landmark building.

A trip to Center City for a tour of the Kimmel Center! We’ll leave the PAC Center at 11:30 and return by 3ish.

Hold the date! The next Web Wandering will be at noon on Monday, June 23 at the PAC Center (as usual). We’ll learn a bit of World War II history that you may not have heard much about.

An appreciative group toured Charles Cresson’s Hedgleigh Spring Garden last Thursday, with a full history of the house, gardens, and family generously offered by our host as we strolled.

Charles pointed out roses planted by his grandfather over 100 years ago that have survived under his tender care, and others, such as a climbing yellow rose, more newly planted, that are better able to survive today’s conditions.

Our host opens his garden for tours but also invites visitors to come at their leisure and enjoy the beauty of the over 2,000 plant species and varieties and the peacefulness of the flowers, pond, and waterfall (he asks only that you close the deer gate behind you when you enter).

Be on the watch if you do come as you just might see Charles up a tree doing his own pruning work to keep everything in tip-top shape!
