Julie C. Ellis, PhD

Wildlife Ecologist

Julie C. Ellis, PhD is a wildlife ecologist and conservation leader whose career covers seabird research, wildlife disease response, and collaborative programs connecting science, policy, and public engagement. She has dedicated over twenty years to leading innovative initiatives that protect wildlife and strengthen partnerships in wildlife health and conservation. Her work includes directing SEANET, a citizen-science network monitoring seabird mortality along the Atlantic coast; founding the Northeast Wildlife Disease Cooperative to support regional wildlife health responses; and launching Penn Vet’s Wildlife Future Program, a major partnership with the Pennsylvania Game Commission focused on emerging wildlife diseases. Julie currently works in Penn Vet’s One Health office.

Julie will present on her recently launched project, the Accessing Urban Nature Initiative (AUNI). By 2050, nearly 70% of the global population is expected to live in urban areas. Though cities are built for people, wild animals also inhabit them. Recent research shows that a connection to nature can enhance human health and strengthen community engagement, yet many Philadelphia residents lack access to these benefits. The goal of the AUNI is to foster a sense of stewardship and curiosity about the natural world among students and communities at Penn and throughout the city, ultimately improving the lives of urban humans and wildlife.

Final Walks and Trails

Please join our last walk before the summer break. Super sleuths Gina and Joe Wood have scouted out the Chester Creek Rail Trail in Middletown and Aston Townships and found it suitable for all walking abilities. The trail is paved and flat, following Chester Creek along the Civil War-era Chester Creek Branch line of the Pennsylvania Railroad (read more about it HERE). To reach the trail head and parking lot, set your GPS to the mailing address: 645 Mt. Alverno Rd., Media, PA. We will meet at this address at 11:00 on Friday, June 5, walk for an hour or so, then have lunch afterwards at nearby Barnaby’s (5501 Pennell Rd., Aston)

For car pooling, we will meet at the clock at the Swarthmore train Station at 10:30. Please contact Beth Lawn, 484-431-3096 to let me know you would like a ride, or if you can drive and take others. See you on the Trail!

Help with Rides

Can you offer an occasional ride to our members?

Stephanie McDonough, SSCA Administrator, works hard to match those needing rides with those who can provide them. Whether you need a ride or can offer one (or both!), you can reach Stephanie at (484) 437-8272. If you can offer rides, you can let her know your general availability. If you need a ride, please allow at least a few days in advance for the best possibility of a successful match with a driver.

Looking for more?

The SSCA offers a number of programs and other ways to get involved. Please email SwarthmoreSeniors@gmail.com to indicate your interests.
