Walks and Trails

"No Sweat"

Meet at the clock at the train station at 2:00 on Thursday, April 9, to take a walk around the Ville. We will use a map from the trail maps created by our Seniors Association, choosing one labeled “no sweat,” going at an easy pace so we can stop and smell the roses-and daffodils, and magnolias, and cherry trees etc. Spring is the prettiest season in the Ville!

You might want to pop into the PAC for Laughter Yoga from 12:30-1:30 ahead of the walk. Alexa Drubay, Certified Laughter Yoga Master Trainer, will have us all smiling and ready for a great afternoon.

Contact Beth Lawn if you have any questions, 484-431-3096.

Trip to Franciscan

Spiritual Center

We had a double treat with a tour of Our Lady of Angels Convent where the Spiritual Center holds programs and a spring and summer vegetables preview at the adjacent Red Hill Farm. Sr. Helen Jacobson gave us a brief history of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia while showing us the beautiful stained-glass windows in the entryway, pictures and statue of St. Francis, and carved wood altar in the ornate chapel. We walked across the street to the Farm and had another guided tour with Lilley, farm director, and learned how they use organic fertilizer and pest management to produce a bountiful harvest for their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shareholders. Some of us ended the day walking the labyrinth and visiting the hermitage cabins open to the public to rent for a private retreat in the woods.

Annual Meeting and Lunch

Upcoming L & L:

04/15 - Delco County Health Dept.

04/22 - David Splain Nether Providence Police Chief

Annual Meeting

Wednesday, April 8th

12:00 - 1:30 pm

Join us for lunch and our one brief business (+fun) meeting of the year. There will be time for visiting in addition to a slide show from the past year.

Our short business agenda will include voting for directors for our Board and voting on a By-laws change which is listed below.

Be sure to be there!

NOTICE TO THE MEMBERSHIP: The SSCA Board proposes a change in the wording of Article IX of the By-Laws.

Current Wording of Article IX, item 2:

“2. The financial data in the annual report shall be audited by a certified public accountant prior to its dissemination to the members of the Association.”

Proposed new wording:

“2. The financial statements included in the annual report shall be compiled by a certified public accountant prior to its dissemination to the members of the Association.”

The rationale for the change is simply that we feel an audit would be an expensive and unnecessary process, a process that as best we can tell has never been done in our association, and the financial reports are compiled by our CPA. So we are proposing a change in the wording so that the bylaws accurately describe current practice.

The complete association By-Laws are available on our website: https://swarthmoreseniors.org/about/#bylaws

Friday Flix

at Swarthmore Pres - 04/10

April is the perfect month for viewing the optimistic, funny, warm film Defending Your Life, starring Meryl Strep and Albert Brooks who also wrote and directed it. Brooks plays the part of Daniel Miller who finds himself in the unenviable position of having to defend his life after experiencing a fatal car collision. He either will move to another plane of existence or return to Earth to work on his "rough spots." Meryl Streep plays his love interest as they await this momentous decision. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 92%.

Come join us on Friday, April 10 in the Study at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church at 7PM. As always, admission and snacks are free.

How would you defend your life?
