Keith Lockhart for presenting at the last minute! As always, Keith's interesting "Then and Now" photos revealed surprising changes in Delaware County. Keith brings us insights into our local history. And isn't it fun to see all the old cars in the "Then" pictures!
By the way, Keith is looking for a resource familiar with Swarthmore College, its history, and environs to help him identify buildings on the campus. Are you that resource or do you know someone who might be? Email Keith to let him know!
Visit Keith's website, https://www.delawarecountyhistory.com/ for more Delco history.

| | SAVE THE DATE! Walk in Smedley Park with park volunteer Stephen Hinds Tuesday, April 22 Earth Day at 2:00. | | What we saw on our walk... | | An early spring walk at Taylor Arboretum in Nether Providence revealed flowering trees and bushes and a variety of spring flowers, but sadly, no croaks or peeps from the Vernal Pond. It had very little water but the rain later in the week hopefully has replenished it; and the amphibians that normally fill the air with their mating songs will trill this spring. We especially enjoyed the shapes the still-leafless trees display this time of year. | Early Spring before the leaves come out is the best time to enjoy the tree shapes. | Vernal pond surrrounded by cypress trees | | Beth B., Felix, Beth L., and Bob | |

Wellness Workshop
Yoga Benefits & Dog Therapy
Tuesday, April 29 - 1:15-3:15 pm
| |
Mark your calendars for the next SSCA Wellness Workshop Tuesday afternoon, April 29 from 1:15-3:15.
Mary Thompson, Director of Health and Wellness at Park Avenue Community Center, will be educating us about how yoga is good for aging. The practice of yoga can improve balance, flexibility, and strength while the breathing component of yoga alleviates stress. A recent Consumers Report article on natural cures states that yoga is recommended to treat back pain, achy joints, sleep problems, mental health, heart problems, and digestive issues! Mary will lead us through some yoga exercises designed for seniors, using a chair.
| |
The second part of the Wellness Workshop will focus on dog therapy: what it is, what training is needed, and certification. Mary is a certified pet therapist and she will bring her dog, golden retriever Liza, to demonstrate how pet therapy can benefit humans. She says Liza is training in a sport called canine nose work, which is based on professional detection dog techniques. Liza will also be available for much petting and attention!
Registration is at the swarthmoreseniors.org website. A $10 registration fee will be
collected; these fees will be donated to Providence Animal Shelter in Media.

Friends of the Arts April Exhibit
"The Friday Group"
|
April's art exhibit, “The Friday Group", presents the artwork of Gail Herring, Lisarose Ferri, Janet Moyer, Margaret Ewing, and Pete Prown. The exhibition will be displayed from April 3rd through the 28th at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue.
The Friday Group includes artists from the Wallingford Community Arts Center (CAC) and its Friday “open studio.” These 2D artists have met for several years, working on their pieces and also discussing each other’s work constructively. In the process, they’ve created a community of people who paint, draw, create mixed-media works, and more. It’s a vibrant (and ever-growing) group who are now friends and strive to support each other’s work at CAC and beyond.
| |
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are M-Th 9am - 8pm, Fri 10am - 7pm, Sat 10am - 3pm, Sun 1 - 5pm.
For information about Swarthmore Friends of the Arts or to submit a request for your own show, visit www.swarthmorearts.org or contact Martha Perkins, martha.perkins@gmail.com.

Help with Rides
Can you offer an occasional ride to our members? Details can be flexible: maybe someone needs a ride TO an appointment but will be picked up by someone else. Or someone has a regular monthly appointment, and one volunteer might be able to provide a ride each month.
Stephanie McDonough, SSCA Administrator, does her best to match those needing rides with those who can provide them. Whether you need a ride or can offer one (or both!), you can reach Stephanie at (484) 437-8272. If you can offer rides, you can let her know your general availability. If you need a ride, please allow at least a few days in advance for the best possibility of a successful match with a driver.
