September’s Art Exhibit “Leaf Shapes, Landscapes“, brought to you by Swarthmore Friends of the Arts, presents paintings by local artist Jessica Graae.
The exhibition will be on display from September 2nd through September 29th at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue. The public is invited to the artist’s opening reception on Friday, September 4th, from 5 to 7 pm. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Jessica Graae delights in the beauty of the outdoors, finding endless inspiration in nature and light for her oil paintings. Her work features woods, streams, and gardens of Delaware County.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are M-Th 9am – 8pm, Fri 10am – 7pm, Sat 10am – 3pm, Sun 1 – 5pm.

Community Classes
The WSCC brochure will be in your mailbox soon! It's that happy time of the summer when the WSCC class schedule is out! Plan your fall and prepare for registration beginning on August 28th! With 28 NEW classes and three dozen returning favorites to choose from, you are sure to find entertainment, enrichment, and enlightenment among the choices.
Here's a sample of the new classes:
CIVIL WAR PERSPECTIVES explores the lesser-known aspects of the Civil War era including Lincoln’s domestic agenda, which featured the creation of land grant colleges, paper currency, and the transcontinental railroad.
HOLLYWOOD DOES POLITICS: CAMPAIGNS AND CANDIDATES IN THE MOVIES focuses on six films concerning the electoral process: Advise and Consent, The American President, Ides of March, Election, Dave, and The Candidate.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURES OF ITALY will introduce you to Etruscan tombs, Greek temples in Sicily, the Colosseum in Rome, and villas in Pompeii.
BAKING SCONES. Learn how to make scones that will delight family and friends.

THE FUN OF MATHEMATICS will let you explore a new topic each week: roulette, poker and
blackjack; Prime numbers; the golden mean and its role in art; geometric designs and trigonometry, fractals and patterns; the irrationality of Pi, and more.
SEX AND GENDER: KNOW THE FACTS, RECOGNIZE THE OPINIONS, REJECT THE NONSENSE. Led by an endocrinologist, this class will examine the biology of sex differences, what we know about the biology of gender identity and sexual orientation, and what mistakes the experts have made. Learn to distinguish fact from opinion in this controversial and politicized area.
CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION OF 1876 focuses on the story behind the event that drew 10 million people to Fairmount Park and what happened to all those buildings that were created for the event.

Play Canasta/Samba Cards from 10:30 am until 1:00 pm on Fridays. New players are aways welcome! Drop in any time before 1:00 pm, and there will always be a seat for you. We teach the game as we play, if you are new to the game.

Can you offer an occasional ride to our members?
Stephanie McDonough, SSCA Administrator, works hard to match those needing rides with those who can provide them. Whether you need a ride or can offer one (or both!), you can reach Stephanie at (484) 437-8272. If you can offer rides, you can let her know your general availability. If you need a ride, please allow at least a few days in advance for the best possibility of a successful match with a driver.
