Welcome to Our Community Newsletter!

Dear Members,

Welcome to the beautiful month of May — a time of renewal, reflection, and celebration!

This month, we recognize several important health and awareness themes:

🌟 Volunteer Week: Honouring the Heart of Our Community

This Volunteer Week (April 27 - May 3), we proudly recognize the incredible dedication and generosity of our volunteers. Your time, energy, and compassion are the backbone of our work, and we are deeply grateful for all that you do. Whether you're helping behind the scenes or working directly with those we serve, your impact is immeasurable. Thank you for making a difference—this week, and every week!

🌿 Hypertension Awareness Month & Vision Health Month

Let’s take this opportunity to raise awareness about high blood pressure and the importance of eye health. Prevention and early detection can make all the difference!

🧠 Mental Health Week (May 1–7)

Let’s continue to break the stigma surrounding mental health. Talking about our wellbeing is the first step toward healing and understanding.

📅 National Child and Youth Mental Health Day – May 7

Mental wellness matters at every age. Let’s support the mental health of our young people and encourage open, compassionate conversations.

👵👶 Quebec Intergenerational Week – 3rd week of May

We’re proud to celebrate the meaningful connections between generations. A special thank-you to the incredible senior volunteers who make our Cooking Workshop at New Liverpool Elementary School such a heartwarming success. Your presence truly makes it special!

🗣️ Speech and Hearing Month

Let’s acknowledge the importance of communication health and support those who face challenges with speech or hearing.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Quebec Family Week (May 12 - May 18) & International Day of Families – May 15

During this time, we celebrate the love, resilience, and diversity of families — in all their shapes and sizes. Families are where we find connection, support, and belonging. Whether it’s through shared meals, warm conversations, or simple everyday moments, families help us grow and feel rooted.

As a community organization serving the English-speaking population, we take this time to look closely at the more vulnerable among us — families who may be isolated, facing economic challenges, or navigating health and social services in a second language. Together, we can make sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to care, connect, and uplift one another.

🌸 Celebrating Mothers

In this joyful season of growth and gratitude, we honor the amazing mothers in our community. Your love, strength, and care are unmatched. Thank you for all you do!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms — you are cherished every day.

With warmth and appreciation,

The SSEN Team

Supporting a Loved One with Mental Health Challenges

If someone close to you is experiencing mental health difficulties, it's natural to feel uncertain about how to help. Éducaloi's informative guide offers practical advice on supporting a loved one, including attending medical appointments with them (with their consent), understanding who can make medical decisions on their behalf, and navigating situations involving forced hospitalization. The guide also emphasizes the importance of respecting their rights, such as the right to refuse treatment in certain circumstances, and provides information on how to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals. For immediate assistance, individuals can contact the 9-8-8 crisis helpline, available 24/7 in both French and English. This resource is invaluable for those seeking to support a loved one while ensuring their legal rights are upheld.

Mental Health Week May 5 - May 11, 2025

Living with a mental health or substance use challenge is hard enough; masking can make it even harder. Living with mental health challenges often forces people to hide behind a “mask” to protect themselves from judgment and discrimination. But the heavier the stigma, the heavier the mask becomes, and the more isolated we feel.

This May 5-11, we’re encouraging people across Canada to look beyond the surface and see the whole person. By embracing honesty and vulnerability, we open the door to deeper connections and the mental health benefits that come with it. In doing so, we can create a ripple effect of courage and understanding across the country.

Navigating Complex Emotions on Mother's Day

Mother’s Day can evoke a range of emotions, and it's important to recognize that not everyone experiences the day in the same way. Anxiety Canada's article, "Mother's Day Looks Different for Everyone," highlights that for some, the day may bring feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, or grief. This could be due to various reasons such as the loss of a mother or child, strained relationships, or unmet expectations. The article emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and validating these emotions rather than suppressing them.It encourages individuals to approach the day with mindfulness, allowing themselves to experience their feelings without judgment. By doing so, one can navigate the complexities of Mother's Day in a way that honors their unique experiences and emotions.
