Dear SSHS Parents,
Congratulations to all of our SSHS graduates. We wish them every success in the future.
We had our final PIC meeting on May 23rd where Grand Futures gave us a very thoughtful presentation on: "The R
apidly Growing Trend of E-cigarettes - JUUL'ing and Vaping - and Their Harmful/Addictive Effects.
Read below for more information and a link to the presentation.
School Counselor, Danica Moss, gave us an update on where our graduates are attending college; check out the next to last section for a list of names and colleges they are attending.
We hope you have a wonderful summer and please come to our first PIC meeting of the 2018-2019 school year on Wednesday, September 5th at 12 noon. We will send a reminder notice at the beginning of the year. Also, if you know other parents who want more information, please encourage them to come and to sign up for our newsletter on our SSHS PIC webpage here.
Happy Summer!
Sincerely,
Steph Smith and Robin Schepper

Vaping and Juuling in High School |
Lindsey Simbeye from Grand Futures gave us a very informative session on Juuling and Asst. Principal Luke DeWolf showed us confiscated items, including a Sharpie that had been reconfigured to be a vape pen. Some of the highlights from the presentation
include:
1.
According the federal law, all U.S. public schools are
Tobacco Free Schools. Tobacco products are not allowed on school property or parking lots.
3.
Retail Marijuana is a Schedule I drug at the federal level. Marijuana is illegal on school property even though it is legal in Colorado because Colorado schools receive federal funding.
4.
Tobacco products are anything that has nicotine or tobacco, and includes any electronic devices to use with nicotine or tobacco.
E-cigarettes are not approved by the FDA.
5.
Cigarette use has been declining,
but the use of new devices is increasing because of marketing - social media, and misleading advertising. The scary statistic is that a v
aper
is
FOUR
times more likely to start smoking cigarettes.
6.
Juuling/Vaping devices
:
One cartridge in a Juul device is the equivalent to a pack of cigarettes. In 2014, 466 brands had 7764 unique flavors of vapes, the flavors are really appealing to kids. In addition to nicotine, the vaping devices and cartridges have other additives that are not
regulated
by the FDA like ammonia, propylene glycol.
7. Juuling is very stealth: You cannot smell the smoke and manufacturers make hoodies to make it easy to vape in school. You have to be 18 to buy a vape device, but SSHS has found vaping devices on students from freshmen to seniors and they have been confiscated at SSMS as well.
8.
Teenage brain development and Addiction: the frontal lobe is the last part of the brain to develop. A
ny introduction to substances like nicotine
, alcohol and marijuana is not good for the brain. The sensors in the brain like the sensation of these substances and the sensors become hard-wired. Adolescents are more likely to become addicted. Adults may crave a hit in an hour, but adolescents in 20 minutes. The more we can delay controlled substances in teenagers, the more we have a chance of them not becoming addicted in the future.
9.
Misleading messages/Marketing
: Vaping and Juuling is often described as a tool to help people stop smoking and has the brand that it is a safer alternative to cigarettes. But the tobacco industry is still targeting youth. Advertising and social media proclaim that vaping is not as bad as cigarettes. The top three brands have the largest advertising budgets.
10. Social Media: Juuling is being promoted by students to their peers using social media. Check out #juuling on Instagram
.
11. Some of the terms you may hear: There are many words you may hear that are related to vaping: ecigs, vape pens, vaping, ghosting, e-hooksah, mods, vape juice....
12. Consequences at SSHS: There are different consequences if a student is caught vaping in school ranging from detention to being referred to a tobacco cessation program and if they are an athlete, missing 30% of their games. In detail t
he SSHS tobacco policy:
Students who violate the Tobacco Free Policy will receive notification (written communication) at the time the violation occurs and will be subjected to the following disciplinary plan:
- 1st Violation: Warning/written communication: A letter containing the policy and consequences of further violations will be sent home to the parent(s).
- 2nd Violation: The parent(s) will be notified of the student's violation and the principal will discuss options with the student regarding disciplinary action
- 3rd Violation: The parent(s) will be notified of the student's violation and the principal will discuss options with the student regarding disciplinary actions.
- 4th Violation: Disciplinary action will be determined by school administration.
13. Scare tactics don't work: Scaring teenagers about nicotine rarely works. It is usually more useful to ask what they are going to do when they are offered a vape or other substance and why do they want to do it? Having conversations regularly, instead of the BIG TALK, is more effective. Principal Taulman suggested starting in the 5th grade.
14. What else can we do: We need to talk to our children and potentially make it harder to buy Juuls and other e-cigarettes. Find ways to share the facts so our students can make information decisions. In addition, we can get policy ideas from other cities. The city of Aspen passed legislation to make it harder for teens to purchase any tobacco product.
Over the school year we have gathered a number of articles about Juuling and vaping that you can find here.

Resiliency Teams at all Schools |
Our district has recognized that students going through trauma cannot learn because their brains are in fight or flight mode. Trauma could be exposure to
adverse childhood experiences
or chronic stressors. Resiliency Teams have been created in each school with 4 staff members and admin. The Resiliency Team at SSHS will help teachers learn how to calm students so they can regulate themselves. They are also working on creating an environment that makes it easier to be regulated to help students learn. SSSD has a goal to get every teacher and staff member trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid and Trauma Informed Care and they are working on ways to provide training for new staff, community, parents, etc. We will ask Principal Taulman to give an update on this at the first PIC meeting in September.

College Research over the Summer |
Our college counselor updated the PIC on some items:
- Over $177,000 in local college scholarships went to 87 students
- Over $1,000,000 in merit-based scholarships awarded to graduating students.
- Incoming and current SSHS students should have their 2018-2019 schedules by the end of June on Infinite Campus.
- Schedule changes will be allowed in early August.
- Summer is a great time to start thinking about college. Here are some great resources from our school counselors. Everything from SAT/ACT prep to figuring out how to prepare to apply for college. Check out the career and college corner.
|
The High School PIC (Parent Information Committee) focuses on number of areas, all with the purpose of supporting a high level education for our students.
Parent information - We provide information to parents in a number of ways:
- Monthly Meetings: At each PIC meeting, we hear from our principal, guidance counselors, college counselor, and school resource officer on important activities happening in the school. We also schedule a speaker to cover important topics relevant to high school students. This past year we focused on the teenage brain - its development, the effects of technology, vaping, drugs and alcohol on the brain, and how music can develop resiliency in our teens. At each meeting, parents have the opportunity to ask questions of the school administration and develop a relationship with the leaders at SSHS.
- Newsletter: Every month we send a newsletter that recaps the PIC meeting and provides other useful information. The newsletter is an opt-in newsletter. Please share the sign up link with others so we can reach more families.
- Facebook page: We share articles and other information of interest. Please follow us at: https://www.facebook.com/sshspic/
- SSHS PIC webpage: You can find archived articles and newsletters and other information on our webpage here.
- Occasional Events: This past school year we co-sponsored a screening of the movie Screenagers, a movie about teenagers and technology.
School Support
- Purchase of needed items: this year we bought bike racks, picnic tables and microwaves, as well as funding for After Prom. The full list of what we funded can be found on our PIC page.
- Staff appreciation
- Meals for staff during parent/teacher conferences
- Cookies and Cuties during Finals for students
- Fundraisers to make these possible:
- City Market Community Rewards Program, make sure to sign up, click here.
