The Week in Review

By Rabbi Mordechai Wecker, Principal

Dear SSLC & JAFA Families,

This week has been filled with great sadness over unspeakable tragedies committed by Hamas against our Israeli brethren. Yet, in our long and at times bitter history, the Jewish people have manifested resiliency in the face of formidable suffering. We pray to G-d that He protect the brave Israel Defense Forces as they defend the Holy Land and all its inhabitants.

As you have undoubtedly seen, there have been a number of security enhancements to our campus. We have been working with local law enforcement agencies in response to recent events. As a result, Montgomery County police officers, in marked and unmarked vehicles, have been monitoring our site numerous times on a daily basis in addition to having officers placed on site.

In addition, we have hired armed security to be present on school grounds throughout the school day. The increased expenses are great for added security and therefore we turn to you and request your support of $50-100 per month to help offset these costs.

Thank you for entrusting your most precious possession, your children with us.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated staff who worked tirelessly this week with your children under these trying circumstances. In addition, we would like to thank our wonderful parents for all of their encouragement and support and for the treats they contributed to our dedicated staff

Sincerely,

Rabbi Wecker & Office Staff

Torah Thought for the Week

By Rabbi Mordechai Wecker, Principal

Love Your Neighbor and G-d’s Image

Genesis 5:1 states: “This is the account of the descendants of Adam, on the day of G-d’s creation of man; He made him in the likeness of G-d.” The commentary Daas Zekanim notes the comment of the Medrash Toras Kohanim: Rabbi Akiva quotes the verse in Leviticus (19:18): “And you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” He comments: This is a significant principle in our Torah.

However, the Midrash continues: Ben Azzai, another great Torah authority, quotes our verse from Bereishis and maintains that it is evocative of an even greater principle.

Da’as Zekanim explains: from the verse quoted by Rabbi Akiva, one may infer only that that which is hateful to me I may not do to my fellow. Ben Azzai adds to that principle fundamentally. He suggests that even if someone is in a certain sense humble or uncaring of his own honor, he must still treat his fellow humans with all due respect and dignity. He must recognize the likeness of Al-mighty G-d in his fellow human even while he chooses not to recognize it in himself. Indeed, Rav Henach Leibowitz zt”l noted that it is only a sense of self-dignity that keeps us from sin. As the sainted Chofetz Chaim *Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan) comments, “By shaming his fellow he is but shaming the likeness of G-d Himself.”
