SNAP Work Requirement Changes Now in Effect-Resources Available to Support Residents

New work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) took effect February 1, 2026, and may impact many residents across our communities. Municipal leaders and community partners play an important role in helping residents understand these changes and maintain access to essential food benefits.

Under the updated rules, adults ages 18–64 without disabilities and without children under age 14 must work, volunteer, or participate in job training for at least 80 hours per month to continue receiving SNAP benefits, unless they qualify for an exemption. Those who do not meet the requirement or qualify for an exemption may only receive SNAP benefits for three months. Individuals who have already reached that limit may lose benefits beginning May 1, 2026. Additional federal changes that took effect April 1, 2026, also affect SNAP eligibility for certain non-citizens.

Residents who use a Link/EBT card are encouraged to take action now to protect their benefits. They can check eligibility requirements or exemptions using the Illinois SNAP Screener, seek assistance through the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and explore free job training opportunities through Job Ready Illinois. Residents in immediate need of food can call 2-1-1 or use the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s Find Food Locator to identify nearby pantries.

Municipalities and community organizations are encouraged to share information with residents. Access the informational resource here.

Little Calumet Watershed Planning Council

Highlights Flood Control Progress

The Little Calumet Watershed Planning Council met virtually on April 15 to discuss the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s (MWRD) latest capital improvement projects and flood control efforts. The update focused on major progress at Midlothian Creek in Robbins and the Thorn Ditch project in South Holland.

Beyond these large-scale projects, MWRD staff provided an update on the Small Streams Maintenance Program, which assists in removing debris and blockages to keep local waterways flowing and prevent flooding. Attendees also learned about various stormwater resources and grants available to municipalities, including a summary of the most recent Stormwater Partnership application round.

Please mark your calendars for our next meeting in July, which will be an in-person site visit. MWRD is planning to take attendees to visit one or more project sites; we will share specific locations and details as soon as they are finalized. We hope you'll join us!
