Latest Census Numbers Show Equal Population Loss and Gain Across Region
|
Recent data from the Census Bureau reports population numbers in the Southland increased in some communities while decreasing in others.
Census data for 48 south and southwestern communities with populations of 5,000 or more show that 24 towns gained population in the past decade while 24 others lost population, according to the recent data reported.
The Census Bureau has not yet released population figures for south suburban communities with population sizes of 5,000 or less. Those towns include Beecher, Burnham, Dixmoor, East Hazel Crest, Ford Heights, Olympia Fields, Peotone, Pheonix, Robbins, South Chicago Heights, and Thornton.
The total population of the 48 Southland communities was 921,277.
“We’re tracking numbers so we can see trends. We’ve been doing that all along, trying to see some of the dynamics within our communities so we can address them and help them recover and rebuild as we look to the future coming out of the pandemic," SSMMA Executive Director Kristi DeLaurentiis said.
Residents can find the latest population estimates for their communities on the U.S. Census website and by utilizing the resources below.

Recent Report Shows Significant Changes in the Property Tax Burden on South Cook Homes and Businesses
|
A new report was issued on Thursday, August 19th from the Office of the Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough regarding the 2020 tax rates and their impact on homeowners, landlords, and businesses in south Cook County.
According to the Clerk's annual report, south suburban Cook homeowners can expect to pay an additional $263.81 in property taxes this year. The typical tax bill for south Cook increased 4.54% to $6,077 for a home
assessed with a fair market value of $190,500.
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas also released a property tax bill analysis of the property taxes charged to 1.8 million Cook County parcels.
Despite the tax rate increase for many suburban municipalities, the Clerk's report outlined that the average tax rates decreased by 11.23% in the south and west suburbs.
“It’s wonderful news that tax rates went down substantially. It is extremely important as we negotiate with new developers. As the tax rates come down it will make it more competitive," said Reggie Greenwood, Executive Director of the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation.
