On Saturday, June 7, 2025, the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association (SSMMA) hosted its Newly Elected Officials Workshop at the Village of Thornton Parks & Recreation facility. Designed specifically for recently elected municipal leaders, the workshop provided valuable guidance on effective governance, financial management, and best practices essential to serving Southland communities.
The event was opened by SSMMA Board President and Lynwood Mayor Jada Curry, who warmly welcomed attendees and emphasized the critical importance of preparation, continuous learning, and collaboration within the roles of elected officials. Mayor Curry set the tone by encouraging participants to take full advantage of the workshop’s resources and opportunities to build knowledge and leadership skills.
Richton Park Village Manager Regan Stockstell then presented on the significance of clear communication, ethical conduct, and role clarity in fostering effective partnerships between elected officials and municipal administrators. Following this, Anthony Burton, Village Administrator of Matteson, offered attendees a detailed presentation on municipal budgeting and finance, highlighting the necessity of strong internal controls, transparency, and prudent financial planning. Burton drew from real-world examples, including the City of Dixon, Illinois, to underscore the importance of robust financial oversight.
Attorney John Murphey of Odelson, Murphey, Frazier & McGrath led an engaging session on municipal governance, using an interactive “Newly Elected Officials Jeopardy” format to effectively convey complex legal concepts related to the Open Meetings Act, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), labor relations, and procedural compliance.
SSMMA Executive Director Kristi DeLaurentiis closed the workshop by providing an overview of SSMMA’s comprehensive work in advocacy, municipal technical assistance, transportation planning, environmental justice, and economic development. DeLaurentiis reinforced SSMMA’s strategic priorities, including advocating for fair pension reforms, stabilizing property taxes, restoring LGDF funding, and promoting critical regional infrastructure projects.
Participants left the workshop equipped with enhanced knowledge, practical tools, and a deeper understanding of SSMMA’s ongoing support in fostering successful and effective leadership throughout the Southland region.
