The South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association (SSMMA), the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation (CSEDC), the Southland Chamber of Commerce, and other partners around the region have long supported the South Suburban Airport (SSA) as a strategic investment to strengthen the regional economy, improve freight mobility, and create new opportunities for residents and businesses across the south suburbs.
As the region waits for this important investment, CSEDC issued a recent press release highlighting actions by the Federal Aviation Administration at O’Hare International Airport as further evidence that the region’s aviation system is under increasing strain—highlighting the need for long-term infrastructure solutions.
CSEDC’s media alert underscored a pivotal opportunity for the region to move forward with infrastructure investments that will support long-term economic growth, innovation, and job creation across the Chicago Southland.
Planned in Will County near Peotone, the proposed airport site is located within a key freight and logistics corridor, offering strong connections to major transportation networks. CSEDC highlights the project’s potential as a cargo-focused hub that could support advanced manufacturing, logistics, and emerging aviation technologies such as Advanced Air Mobility.
"The SSA will not only enable the private sector to create huge employment opportunities in the diverse Southland for the first time since our steel and manufacturing base began downsizing half-a century ago", said SSMMA Legislative Chairman and Village of Richton Park Mayor Rick Reinbold, "but it also fills the void as our cargo-oriented facility could help reaffirm Illinois' global pre-eminence as the transportation hub of the nation”.
