SSMMA Environmental Justice Committee Unanimously Approves Municipal Representative Resolution

The South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association’s Environmental Justice (EJ) Committee unanimously approved the EJ Municipal Representative Resolution at its October 23 meeting, marking an important step in strengthening regional coordination and support for environmental resilience and community health initiatives throughout the region. The Resolution formalizes each municipality’s participation by encouraging Mayors and Presidents to designate themselves and at least one staff representative to the Committee to ensure consistent engagement, streamline communication, and better align municipal needs with available resources, data tools, and funding opportunities.

By establishing an ongoing network of municipal representatives, the EJ Committee is better positioned to share best practices, coordinate cross-community initiatives, and respond collectively to challenges that disproportionately affect Southland residents. Municipal staff appointees could include managers and administrators, public works directors, planners, economic and community development staff, or others whose roles intersect with sustainability, infrastructure, and quality-of-life concerns. SSMMA will work closely with municipalities in the coming weeks to support the designation process and provide any technical assistance needed.

Copies of the resolution and supporting memo have been distributed to all SSMMA mayors and managers. Municipalities are encouraged to return completed resolutions to David Clay II at david.clay@ssmma.org by January 1st, 2026.

If your municipality has any questions, needs support in identifying an appropriate representative, or would like assistance presenting the item to council or board, please reach out to David directly by email or at (708) 922-4682.

News from Community Partners

UIC & CCDPH Request Leader Participation in Healthy Work Study

CCDPH is partnering with the UIC School of Public Health’s Healthy Work Initiative to support efforts that enhance worker health and safety across suburban Cook County. UIC researchers are inviting municipal leaders to participate in a 45–60 minute virtual interview to discuss how “healthy work” is defined locally and what practices are currently in place or desired.

Findings will help shape recommendations to strengthen worker support throughout the region. Participation is voluntary, and all responses will remain confidential and included only in a summarized report shared with project partners and participants. If you have any questions or are interested in participating in this opportunity, email UIC SPH at p3rc@uic.edu.

On November 5, regional partners gathered at Hazel Crest Village Hall for a collaborative workshop focused on improving coordination around stormwater and flood response. The event was hosted by SSMMA, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The session brought together municipal, county, and state representatives to share tools, discuss available agency support, and strengthen communication during flood planning and emergencies. Presentations highlighted MWRD stormwater partnership programs, state emergency response processes, community health and resilience, flood insurance guidance, and emergency management efforts from Cook County and the City of Chicago.
