Earlier this week, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) held its first public meeting on their I-57 Access Study which is a Phase I study consisting of preliminary engineering and environmental studies to improve access to I-57 in Will County. During their formal public meeting at the Peotone Fair Grounds, IDOT provided an overview of the study, sought input from members of the public about transportation issues and needs within the study area, and highlighted public involvement opportunities for stakeholders.
The I-57 Access study area, bounded by Wilmington-Peotone Rd (south), Manhattan-Monee Rd (north), US Route 45 (west), and 1-mile east of IL 50 (east), includes the Villages of Monee, Peotone, and University Park, all SSMMA members.
The study will assess current conditions and identify improvements for better access to I-57, addressing traffic needs through 2050 and enhancing local and regional connectivity. As part of the Illinois Priority Freight Network, upgrades must support large trucks and access to freight hubs like distribution centers and related corridors.
SSMMA wants to encourage community leaders— as stakeholders— to become and stay involved. A stakeholder is anyone who could be affected by the project, has a stake in its outcome or is interested in the project. Stakeholder feedback is essential and encouraged throughout the project and IDOT is making it easy to get involved! Here’s how:
· Complete IDOT’s Survey
· Attend future Public Meetings—sign up to receive notices
· Join the Community Advisory Group (CAG) that will serve as a liaison between the study team and the community (complete CAG application by Dec. 4, 2024)
· Subscribe to Study updates
· Visit the I-57 Study website for more information, explore maps and charts, and study timeline
While this is the first of three phases of the I-57 Project, this improvement is included in IDOT’s FY 2025-2030 Proposed Highway Improvement Program. SSMMA will be sure to provide regular updates on upcoming meetings and opportunities for continued input. For more information contact Leslie Rauer.
