SSO opens
Season 11
under new principal conductor William Rowson

The Stratford Symphony Orchestra welcomes concertgoers this Saturday (Oct. 3) to Season 11, appropriately titled "New Beginnings," with a new principal conductor taking the baton for the opening concert in the orchestra's second decade.
The orchestra, led by William Rowson, will open with Gioachino
Gioachino Rossini
Rossini's rousing William Tell Overture. Then soprano Laura Duffy, winner of the 2015 SSO Emerging Artist Competition, will sing arias from operas by Giacomo Puccini, Vincenzo Bellini and Charles Gounod. (See complete program for details.) The orchestra will also perform a composition by Mr. Rowson, Aria for Orchestra, which, says the composer, "will give the SSO, too, a chance to sing."

Following intermission Mr. Rowson will conduct Antonin Dvořàk's
Antonin Dvořàk
Symphony No. 9, popularly known as the New World Symphony, written while the Czech composer was living in New York from 1892 to 1895.

The SSO has not had a permanent conductor since April 2011. Mr. Rowson was selected by a search committee from a field of five candidates, each of whom had conducted the orchestra during the past season, and his appointment was confirmed and announced by the SSO board of directors in March.

The concert venue is Knox Presbyterian Church at Ontario and Waterloo streets. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at Fanfare Books, Blowes Stationery (downtown), Festival Mall kiosk and Lyric Flowers (St. Marys), as well as on the SSO website. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for students (with a valid ID). Children under 12 are admitted free.
Season subscriptions ($180 for all six concerts) represent a 25 per cent saving over the individual ticket price. A student subscription is $50.

THE MORNING AFTER (. . . Season 11's first concert)
