April 29, 2021
As you will see in this week’s newsletter, there is a lot going on – past, present, and future – in our family of faith. For starters, over thirty SSPCers explored Cumberland Island last weekend. It was an amazing day of learning, fellowship, and being out in God’s creation. A special thank you to Nat Scott and Madelynne Risi for helping to organize and lead that joint outing of our Congregational Life and BRIDGE Mission Program ministries.

We are also excited to recognize and celebrate all of our high school and college graduates this Sunday, May 2, as part of Graduate Sunday. If you have a graduate in your family who you would like to be included, please click the link below to submit their name and information. The deadline for submitting names is 4P this afternoon. We look forward to marking the achievements of all of our young people who are finishing one chapter and preparing to begin another!

Lastly, we continue to rejoice with Annie, Thomas, and Molly Claire Arvin as they welcomed a new member of their family – Elizabeth “Elsie” Jane – into the world last Tuesday. In addition to cards and prayers, one way you can help to love and support the Arvin Family is by taking them a meal in the coming months. You can find details and sign up to provide dinner by clicking the link below.

Blessings to you all and hope to see you soon!

Peace,
Rev. Alan Dyer
Pastor

Musical Notes
Lord, for Thy tender mercy’s sake lay not our sins to our charge but forgive that is past and give us grace to amend our sinful lives. To decline from sin and incline to virtue that we may walk in a perfect heart before Thee now and evermore. Amen.

These are the words to Sunday’s anthem. It is an appropriate prayer for Communion Sunday. “Although commonly ascribed to the English composer Richard Farrant (1530-1580), it has also been attributed to Thomas Tallis and John Hilton. The text is taken from Christian Prayers and Holy Meditations (1566) by Henry Bull.” - Google! Many choirs sing this a cappella (unaccompanied) piece as a staple of their repertoire. It has the feeling and sound of a madrigal, which was very popular in the Renaissance Period. The end of the piece is polyphonic, meaning that there are two or more parts singing different lines at the same time that makes it sound like a madrigal. You hear an example of this in the middle section of Handel’s famous Hallelujah Chorus. The first part of the piece is homophonic, which means that everyone is singing the same words and rhythms at the same time, but the notes are different. That is exactly like a hymn in our hymn book. You can add this to the “learn something new every day” list!

This year, we had two snowbirds in the choir – basses John Sergey and Richard Boettcher. John is still with us through the beginning of May, but Richard has already gone home. We miss our other snowbirds, but hopefully they can all fly south next winter! Thank you, John and Richard!
