It’s an understatement that light is pretty important for our health and all other forms of life. The last time I went to Germany to visit my friend Caroline and perform a recital, I noticed that the Christmas lights were still up even though it was around January 15th. Because they are so much closer to the Arctic Circle, there is very little daytime at that point in the year. Münster, Germany is on the same latitude as Calgary, Alberta, Canada for a reference point. It pretty much got dark at 4:00 pm and the sun came up around 9:00 am the next day, so you can understand why it’s so important to leave up all of the shining white lights strung throughout town. I’ve noticed that this year there are way more lights on houses than in other years and they went up not too long after Halloween!
To call attention to that, I’ve selected a hymn that we don’t sing very much but that we will really enjoy once we learn it. The words are almost like Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, but to a different tune in gospel style.
Here are the words to the chorus: We’ll walk in the light, beautiful light. Come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright. O, shine all around us by day and by night. Jesus, the light of the world.
The Chancel Choir Ensemble will sing Rosephanye Powell’s The Word Was God, based on the scripture that the Gospel of John begins with – In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.
Upcoming
Don’t forget to come to the back parking lot on December 16 at 6:15 pm after car-oling. We will sing Christmas songs one after the other backed up by the Chancel Ensemble for about 35-40 minutes. A small booklet of words will be provided for you. Dress warmly, bring a chair, wear a mask, and enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit!
Hope, Peace, Joy, & Gratitude,
Rhonda
