Dean's Welcome

Dear friends,

We are enjoying a peaceful fall here in the School of Science and Technology, with most classes in person and no environmental disruptions so far, knock on wood! Many students have commented that it feels like things are finally back to normal on campus! Students are engaged with coursework, research, and field trips, and our buildings and laboratories are busy.

We are engaged in a search for a new hire in Nursing and are also working with the School of Education and Cal Poly Humboldt to implement the Redwood Coast K-16 Collaborative, supporting students in pathways to Education and Health Care careers throughout Lake, Mendocino, Del Norte, and Humboldt Counties. The Engineering Department is also very excited to have obtained ABET accreditation for the B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

We are delighted to share these updates with you and are looking forward to the spring.

Unfolding the Structural History of the Western Margin of North America at Poleta Folds

In the Department of Geology at SSU, students are taught hands-on scientific techniques to better understand the Earth throughout a series of camping-based field trips across western North America. These trips are the foundation of the department, and introduce students to the remarkable geology that surrounds us all. The Department of Geology's Matty Mookerjee and Philip Mooney recently led 13 students across California on a field trip for an upper-division course in Structural Geology.

Turning the tides for western pond turtles

A rowboat drifts atop a small, glassy lake encircled by a noisy highway, a bustling golf course and a lively playground. In this little aquatic refuge, two men row along to transport unusual cargo: young western pond turtles. The tiny, palm-sized creatures meander in clear plastic tubs resting in the boat's hull as they await freedom in their new home.
