GRADUATION

SSW Shines at the Annual Keys For Homeless Conference

SSW students, alumni and faculty presented at the Long Island Coalition for Homeless annual conference in December.. The students presented, "Transformation from the Inside Out: Using a Rights-Based Approach to Reimagine Services for our Unsheltered Neighbors."

The interactive presentation introduced the concept of starting from human rights and using a rights-based framework to guide how services and policies are designed. Participants were invited to collaborate on imaging what social services could and should look like. Students and other participants used their personal experiences and practice wisdom along with research and policy to talk about social change. At the end of the workshop small groups of attendees brainstormed ideas to transform the barriers in the current housing system. The student presenters were passionate, compassionate and shared their knowledge on housing and homelessness. Congratulations to all on an outstanding presentation!

ADVOCATING IN ALBANY!

SSW faculty, students and alumni gathered with allies including Social Workers for Justice for a powerful Day of Action in Albany on January 22, advocating for equity and access in the profession. Together with passionate colleagues they rallied, shared testimonies, and pushed for policies that will help build a stronger, more diverse workforce. From the inspiring speeches on the Capitol steps to the impactful conversations with lawmakers, their collective voices were loud and clear! The group met with Assembly Members and Senators to advocate for their support for legislation eliminating the licensure exam. SSW participants along with other advocates met with Assemblyman Phil Ramos who is a strong supporter of the Social Work Workforce Act and Senator Anthony H. Palumbo’s Chief of Staff. Senator Palumbo represents the1st Senate District on Long Island that includes Stony Brook.
